Probably a touchy subject but for the longer trips do any of you bring extra gas for the dingy?
 
I typically top off the dinghy tank before the trip. No extra gas usually needed
 
Yes, on long trips I have in the past brought a 5 gal old fashioned plastic gas can for the dink. Strapped to the swim platform out in the open air. Handy to have. Just don’t carry it in the ER.

I always had a small one gallon tank about half full and left it in the dinghy.... just in case....rowing a dinghy is not on my bucket list:)

We use 5 gallon plastic cans on swim platform. Make sure you use all the gas in the year you purchase it. I found over winter the gas had water in it in the spring.

I kinda watch for the old style gas cans on Craigslist. From time to time I find one and will pick it up.

I agree 100% with Blueone's post.
 
I haven't thought of looking for the old ones on Craigslist; gonna see if I can find a couple there.

Dude, where have you been? Since 2009 all gas cans have to be non-permeable and the spout has to close automatically. They are horrible to use.

As far as a can for the dingy, I have a 3 gallon can on the dink. I have a 2 gallon old-style gas can that fit perfectly in the trunk of the AJ. I'd fill up the tank of the dink, then take home to refill. The 2 stroke motor was thirsty with 2 kids running it around all day.

Obviously under a rock. Haven't bot one in awhile. Why can't these a-hole governments just leave well enough alone. First the fk with the light bulb and now the gas can.
 
I hate the new cans as well. It is an easy fix to make them all better. Just install one of these vents into the top of the can opposite the spout and pour way. Makes any can pour very easy. If you have a can without the automatic spout it helps even more. Works great with the no-spill cans as well.

I don't mind the light bulb thing so much any more. Technology really has progresses so there are a TON of good options. I've been gradually switching over to LED as the regular bulbs burn out, so it's not so expensive all at once.

The gas can thing sucks ***. They STILL can't figure out a G** d*** gas can? $%&^$# :mad: I was very miffed when my old steel 2.5 gallon can sprung a leak.
 
sorry to burst your bubble but the thing with the gas cans started in the early 2000s when George was President. I was CG liaison to the EPA on the boat emissions stuff and they were working on the gas cans then.
 
Back to the question , yes I bring extra cans along. I run the crap out of my 25hp dinghy. It uses a lot of gas at wot. Lol
So when I went to the Everglades I took along an extra 25 gals for the 4 days we were anchored in the shark River. I ran way back in the park and fished all over.
So yes it is safe and I highly recommend you take as much fuel with you as you need.
