Had a miss and replaced Distributor Cap, Button, and Pitot Sensor. Seems like it is getting worse. Used it Friday and was fine WOT but missing 2-3ooo RPM rance. Yesterday, I spit and sputtered all the way back to the dock. I tried all different ROM ranges with no luck. Any Idea where to start. P.S. The speedo house came off the L piece in the outdrive, I don't think that would do it. Thank you everyone.

I can’t find it right now but someone else recently had a similar issue. Basically the distributor needed to be rotated VERY slightly. There is an issue possibly with timing chain stretch and there is a procedure to adjust it. There is a YouTube video on is and a guy on eBay sells the home made test light to get it exact.

Can someone else post a link to the thread if you know where to find it?

Thanks to all. It ran OK when I replaced the cap and then over the next 10-12 hours of boating it got way way worse. I can barely get 2000 RPM and its coughing up the intake. I put new plugs today and they didn't look bad. I have a coil, wires and fuel fliter on order. I tried it with new plugs and fuel fliter removed. Was the same. Does it sould like it could still be this distributor issue (I just changed the cap). Again thanks all!!

Did you put loctite on the Torx screws when you screwed the cap down? It may be loose.

They had loctite on them with the new cap and rotor. I will def double check.

The cheap auto distributor caps come with the wrong screws. They are a different pitch than the old. Presumably, they could cut new threads in the distributor body if you tightened them hard enough. Reviewers of the cheap caps noted theirs were loose and experienced similar problems. I used my old screws with Loc-tite while others may have paid double for a Mercruiser cap with the right screws.

Putting in new plugs was the right thing to do but it ain't easy.
