My 260 merc overheats as i get underway.ok at idle.I get flow from the cooler line alsoThe stern drive alpha one pump has about 300 hours no overheats I can remember.
I do hear some noise around the engine pump and also notice line from pump to tstat is hot.
The motor is a 1987 260.
Any experience in this pump

Take the belts off of the circulating pump and spin it by hand. If it’s noisy, I’d replace it.

And at 300 hours, I’d say you are more than overdue for an outdrive water pump replacement.

Look for a drip of water from behind the pump pulley or water droplets sprayed around the timing chain cover behind the pump.

With the age of the motor the cooling passages could be restricted. Have manifolds and risers ever been replaced?

Thanks,i will check as suggested

I found the overheat cause. It was the water pump base failed and was sucking exhaust.
Replaced good as new motor runs much better solved high oil temp also.
I did the job myself in my 10 th of PD.
Old is just a three letter word
Lol
