Is there not any 500 sundancer owners on here

Hi Marc - I looked through your extensive photos on 10/20/19 explaining how to fix water leaks from the windshield washer hoses. Very good detailed information.

My problem is an electric solenoid that opens and shuts the water to the windshield washers which is stuck open. It is operated by a switch from helm dash panel. I looked behind the panel under the galley sink today and did not see a solenoid but there was a lot of plumbing and a large water valve which may cut off much of the water in the boat.

I looked there today because I read another post that said that is where it is located. There was a 1/4 inch water line that seemed to loop around but I did not see a valve or solenoid.

Yes that solenoid should be there. Try to look good behind that panel. When I remember correctly it’s almost against the hull. Maybe it’s a bit higher located at your boat.

but you wrote that you saw a big water valve. Maybe previous owner took away the solenoid (which would be strange).
The water line that goes from the solenoid to the washers is not a grey pvc waterline but a flexibel, sort of transparant hose. It really should be located behind that panel.

Ok let’s start the oil thread! The discussion everyone loves.
What oil are you guys running in you series 92’s
I heard a 40 wt like Delo 100 or Mobil delvac were good. Any recommendations?

Mobil 1240D-20 I use for our 2 6v92 Detroit’s.

from my local dealer I received a recommendation list. It’s in Dutch but I think you all understand.

Does anybody got a good line on the delo 100 40wt? The 5 gal pails are hard to find

I use Rottella 40w. And I buy it at Tractor Supply in the 2.5 gallon jug. Much easier to handle onto boat and into engine room.

Not a critique but does it concern you that oil has a higher ash content then others?

I am aware the ash content of the rottella has tested as being higher than some others. But I do not believe it to be harmful to my engines. I have been a diesel mechanic for better than 40 years and have never seen ant direct evidence that ash content has damaged an engine that was properly maintained. I cant say the same for lower to no sulfur content fuel. I am very comfortable with the Rottella.

Fair enough. The stuff is much cheaper in price per 5 gal pail I notice as well.

We have used Rotella 40w for the last 16 years. Knock on wood, all good.

Alright I am just a smidge away from ownership of one of these beasts!
Hull survey passed awesomely
Engine survey was great pending oil/coolant sample analysis
Owner fixed what I asked.

As long as the bank doesn’t get weird or the Democrats start a revolt, we are very close to ownership :)

Thanks Marc, you are correct and I found the solenoid valve. The shut off valve actually can turn off the water to the solenoid. I looked directly at it but did not see it. Have not been this happy in a long time.

Alright looks like I got this one!
Question: I always see someone here post about a DIY holding tank clean formula. Something about tide and water softener?
We are going to be being this boat from bottom of Lake Michigan all the way around mitten to Lake St Clair. Was this this to be a good time to clean this thing out since I will be fueling and pumping out near daily on the trip. Thought it would be a really good tank cleaner if you will.

We have been making our way home to lake st Clair from Benton harbor. It has been an awesome trip. We are stopped in Presque Isle due to weather but enjoying ourselves nonetheless

Made it home earlier today. It was an awesome trip. The longest I have ever captained a boat., I think we spent about 25 hours run time around over 5 days. Fuel Consumption in the Detroit 6v92TABs were a bit better than expected at 47 gallons an hour at 1900 rpms staying between 18.5-20 knots for the cruising speed. Generator got some usage as we typically left it on at lunch and after until we reached port to keep fridge and AC going. Learned a lot about the boat and can even stern in to the dock without going into the dock lol.
Wife and kiddos loved it to except the horrible WiFi at the state municipal marinas.

Your fuel consumption actually sounds a little high, we have 8V92s and burn a little over 30 gals per hour at cruise. 1700-1800 RPMs 22-23 MPH.

Must agree with Bahama. Sounds a bit high.
Month ago we filled our tanks full and went out for a 118 miles trip.
The trip contained all different speeds, waiting for bridges (engine on), locks, open waters (2000-2200 rpm) and rivers (1000rpm). Didn’t use the genny
We burnt 124 gallons in total with our 6v92 on 118 miles

Hmm maybe I need to back it down a hair. I see you are both referencing measurement in Miles and MPH vs NM and Knots.
I think the extra few hundred rpm would certainly eat more fuel exponentially

Yall have me second guessing my fuel burn somewhat now. Typical easy cruise we run about 10 to 12 mph @ around 1200 rpm. I have fuel burn calculated at about 2 gallon a mile with genny running.
