Official 400EC thread

I'm looking at installing a bow thruster on my 400 EC. Does anyone have one installed on their 400 EC, and if so can you tell me where it was installed? Photos would be awesome!!

Talon,
I think you'll be the first 400EC owner with bow thrusters....LOL... Why not go all the way and just add Joy Stick Control..he he he. Keep us posted if you do this, would be a great project to follow.

Good Morning, The "Power Vent" on my boat hasn't worked since I bought the boat. I'd like to try and get it sorted out.
  1. Where is the fan located?
  2. Here's what happens - I switch the breaker on at the main panel. Next I go and switch the vent on with the switch on the wall to the left of the cooktop. The lights dim immediately and 1-2 seconds later the main breaker trips.
  3. The fan in the head seems to operate as it should. A little loud but moving air.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Kind of the same question here - I have a switch for "power vent" but cannot find any "powered vents" in the boat?

It is under the stove in the galley. Open the top drawer and reach in and push the bottom of the stove. You can lift it up and tilt it up. (it may take some pressure to release the tap or velcro that holds the stove in place)

I swapped out the original accumulator with a 2 Gallon accumulator tank. It cut down on the cycling of the pump.

Popped up my stove - no accumulator tank. Didn't see any mounting hardware or holes where it would have been and then removed. Need to check the bilge. If I have one, it is not working. May have to add one under the stove.

I found an access panel inside the medicine cabinet and the fan for the bathroom vent is in there. I had read some posts stating that both vents were driven off of one fan, but that is definitely not true on my boat. The fan behind my medicine cabinet is only connected to the bathroom vent.

There is a speaker mounted on an access panel on the side of the boat near the bell. I'm guessing fan access is thru that panel.

No luck. It's not behind the speaker, it's not behind the coffee maker, I'm at a loss.

..it's not behind the coffee maker, I'm at a loss.

You removed the coffee maker, then the access panel on the right side - allowing you to see the hull of the boat - and still didnt find it? Thats where mine is. Replacing it looks like a nightmare - simply due to getting to the screws and securing the vent tubing.

To get that access panel back in place was a chore for me. Its a perfect fit and has to press in there straight on/even.

Note: Look at the exterior hull for the fan exhausts - make sure you have two, then use their location as frame of reference.

I was looking at, and am curious/interested in the jet thruster system. Might be slightly more affordable, and perhaps DIY-able. In either case, I keep thinking if I could swap the pump/motor with something 110v related. Using the generator instead of adding additional batteries/charger seems like it might be an option.

Anyone else look into the jet thruster?

Do you see a 'T' in the water lines running through the area? If there is a T that is capped, that is where an accumulator tank was located.

I have not heard of or seen any other locations for the tank.

There should be two: one in the head; the other in the galley over the stove. I can take pictures of the inlet vents for each when I get home from work later today.

Sounds like the galley vent fan is definitely shot.

I removed the coffee maker but couldn't get the access panel to the right out. I removed the screws, but the panel was stuck. Of course that's where the fan access is.

There were 2 lines ( I assume hot and cold ) both had T's but had lines on all sides - just need to do some more investigating to see what goes where. . . .

What size props is everyone running? The Sea Ray prop charts seem to stop at the 330's. My build sheet shows 20x20C, but I don't know whats on the boat currently - I've got 7.4L @340HP. No problems that I'm trying to solve - just there's a used set of Bronze 18x21 props for sale 1-1/2 shaft, cheap enough to use a a spare set for worst case conditions - just not sure how the diameter vs pitch trade-off works.

I have 20x20 cupped props on mine. The 18x21's could be a bit too 'small' causing the engines to run too high an rpm at wide open throttle but could be a worthwhile spare if things go sideways. Guessing they would cause your engines to run 200 rpms higher than the 20x20s. (Minus 200 rpms 21" pitch vs 20" pitch - Plus 400 rpms 18" diameter vs 20" diameter)

Let me try to remember to take some pictures for you when I am home after work today.

Hey guys, need a little help. I have a contract to sell my boat 1994 400EC and the survey found some stringer rot. The are saying it starts in the engine compartment left of the starboard engine and runs to the sump pump in the cabin. I've never dealt with stringer rot so I have a couple of questions:
  1. What are the ramifications of operating the boat in this condition? Is it a safety hazard that needs to be addressed immediately, or could it be taken care of in the off season or does it even need to be addressed?
  2. Has anyone had a similar problem or is this a known issue with this boat?
  3. Does anyone know what kind of $$ we are talking about to get something like this fixed?
Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear about that (particularly because I have the same boat).

My 2 cents are:
1. It could be a serious problem. The stringers are like the studs in the wall supporting the house. If the stringer is rotted, the fiberglass bottom has no support structure behind it. A hard hit or increased flexing over time could weaken the fiberglass hull that could lead to cracks or a rupture.

2. I have not heard of this issue on our boats and don't remember seeing any other posts about rot in the stringer on this thread or the 400DA-410DA/400EC-410EC thread.

3. I can imagine that a repair of a stringer that runs past the engine room bulkhead into the cabin is not going to be cheap.

If it was me, I would want to get a 'second opinion' from a surveyor I know and trust and see what they find. I would not go to the boat yard/repair shop just yet until I confirm there is a problem.

Curious, does the paint on your stringer look in good shape? Any signs that water could be getting in anywhere? How does the stringer look in the area near the sump pump and by the bilge pump under the cabin entry stairs?
