420/44 DB Owners Club

Hey guys. Just installed a Hurley H30 and I am questioning how I want to strap the inflatable down once its down on the rack. Whats everyone doing with their straps and how does it look? I strapped mine down and went for a ride and it rocks in place a little bit. Doesn't look serious but just concerned that its moving around and I can't see it easily. Yep, I've got a few areas that are bubbling up. Its been that way ever since I bought the boat five years ago. It has not spread noticeably so I have not tackled it. Grinding away the paint and surface corrosion wont be hard but spot painting will be very difficult to match I fear hence I live with it. If anyone has a good matching product to top coat the area with, That would be a great share.
Carpe Diem
same here, have not done anything about it yet!

Hey gang,
I have been looking for the autopilot compass with no luck. In this thread, two different locations are mentioned: under the portside bunk (which is where the manual states it is) and behind the port sofa backrest. I don't see it in either of those locations.

Any other ideas? mine is always off about 5 degrees and before doing a calibration, I wanted to make sure there is nothing nearby that could be interfering with it.

Thanks!

Mine is by the control panel (to the bottom right of it). Need to take off back rest of the port sofa bed and look at the wall where control panel is mounted to.

How do you know it's off 5 degrees? Have you done the compensation lately on the magnetic compass at the helm? I assume you are comparing what is shown on the electronics vs the helm compass... So Ottawa - your declination is something like -15 degrees right then a bit further East it gets weird? If you are setting up True make sure to consider that.... That fopaux bit me on my first trip to the Eastern Bahamas.

Mine is in the stbd locker on the back deck right by the sliding door. Mounted to the back wall.

I figured asking this question would involve some learning on my part!

I have been noticing differences between the headings reported by the autopilot and the heading reading on the magnetic compass. It's not exactly 5 degrees...it varies by more or less depending on the direction the boat is facing. I will take some time and note the deltas.

As for compensation of the magnetic compass, no I haven't. My understanding is that deviation is a function of the installation and surroundings, not geographic location. I assumed it was compensated correctly (perhaps wrongly), and the boat has not changed significantly so it should be good. Variation, on the other hand, is a function of location and is not something you compensate for in the compass. Were you suggesting I need to compensate the compass for location? Maybe I am misreading you.

My baseline understanding is that if the compass is compensated properly, and the autopilot calibrated properly, given they both read magnetic headings they should be fairly close.

I will see about confirming the compass compensation...

Not there. Assuming I am talking about the same locker (tall skinny one) I have a speaker with a large magnet in that compartment...wouldn't be a good location, I don't think.

I don't see it there. On the back wall, next to the electrical panel there is nothing. Behind the middle seat back are two amplifiers (sub/cockpit speakers and cabin speakers). Behind the forward seat back is a Cruisair air conditioner pump relay.

It's very strange there are so many different locations for this thing. Obviously Sea Ray had trouble finding an ideal location where it would work optimally.

" Can Dead Men Vote Twice"
I think you will need this especially where you live.

At Elections, or add Whiskey? :)

Where my boat is in Rockport in the 1000 Islands we are -12° 35' declination (negative / west) so without taking compass deviation into account, that same amount would need to be added to the compass reading to compare to true North. A good review...it's been a while since high school orienteering!

I can fiddle with deviation, algebra and the Ritchie compass, but I what I really want to know is if I have put a toolbox or cell phone charger next to the fluxgate compass before I do anything at all!!

Am I correct in assuming the autopilot doesn't make any variation corrections using positional / GPS data from the chartplotter. I don't see anything in the documentation that would suggest it would.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction (pardon the pun) regarding compass headings...

Mine is under the port side bunk or maybe under the little seat in front in front of the locker door at the end of the bunk. I remember running across in once and thinking that it was strange to see it way down there. It is tucked up under a ledge. Ill be down to the boat tomorrow morning and confirm.

Here are some more, most of them are from my boat!
Amazing photos. Thanks for sharing. If you have any more please post them. It’s nice to see what lies behind and beneath the inserts and panels.

Hey all, I got the itch and looking to go from my 32 DA to a 42... main differences between the 42/44 and any recommendations or advice about what to look for option/motors on the 42 and any helpful advice would be appreciated, Thinking about moving up in the spring! Thanks in advanced!!

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance... That’s where any sting will be. The engines, Generator and hull are solid and most ailments easily repaired. But the big ticket items when I bought mine was catching up on the neglected engine and generator servicing such as belts, filters, anodes, coolers and heat exchangers. Boat wise, my rudders were leaking, some bilge pumps weren’t working, batteries were old, sea Cocks were seized, fuel needed polishing and anti fungal treatment, and yes the fresh water in the bilge was traced to the cavity between the engines (fixed with the standard hole and retrofitted inspection cover). Make sure you have about 20k in reserve for surprises and upgrades. The electronics may also be outdated. Get a survey and ensure all 5 oil samples are analyzed. But once this is all done, you won’t find a more versatile or capable boat. Oh, almost forgot, you WILL need to replace the toilet lines if they haven’t already been done. Good luck

Thanks for the info, sounds like all common stuff I appreciate the heads up!! Any real diff between 42 and 44??

Only difference I can see, apart from age, and some minor options and location of components differences, is engine technology. If you can stretch your budget to a later model with the QSC’s its well worth it.

Hey folks,
Quick questions. I had my mechanic take apart my Racors to clean up the bowls and change out the filters. He sent me a picture of what appears to be rubber sludge, probably from the fuel lines deteriorating. He said the float ball was so clogged he was surprised the boat even ran. It was about a quarter of a sandwich baggie full from each Racor. Anyone ever see this issue. He suggested it my be the Biobor, but just a guess. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

For clarification, are you thinking staying with DA or moving to the 420SD or 44DBs? Different threads so you might get different or better input. Way different boats as I’m sure you are aware.
