My port engine has stopped running three consecutive times when the digital fuel indicator indicates 55 gallons. The broker (previously Sea Ray engine mechanic and then service manager) thinks it is possibly the pickup pipe has a hole/slit at the 55 gallon level in the tank. I need to take out the fuel pickup line from the 125 gallon fuel tank. Anyone have any experience getting the port fuel line and pickup out of the fuel tank.

Thanks in advance.

I'm willing to bet you will need to cut a hole in the deck to access the fuel pickup. It isn't a big deal since you can install an access port. It just depends where on the deck it is.

I think on the 290 the single tank Is under the aft cabin bed and extends into the engine room behind the generator. I think I can get to it just not how to remove the pickup line.

thanks for your help.

The issue is lifting the pickup out. You need to have a vertical clearance to remove the pickup tube which goes to the bottom of the tank.

Did your mechanic friend mention if he had ever done this repair before? The reason why I ask is that for the pickup tube to split is pretty unusual. I have seen them rust out from water in the tank but splitting would be unusual for a pickup.

One other thought....has there been any engine work done on the boat specifically on the fuel delivery system or the generator? Your tank should have multiple connections on it.

Are you sure your gauge is accurate and your not just running out of fuel?
Yes. Each time I’ve filled the tank with around 60 gallons of fuel and the next day the engine starts rightup

Good points John. I will check as I have all the maintenance records since the boat was new

thanks

If you can....also shoot a picture of the connections. In the back of my mind I keep wondering if they did some work and confused the generator pickup with an engine pickup. The generator pickup should be about 8-9" in length and the engine pickups should be 12 3/8".

That difference is to ensure that the generator does not run you out of gas to get home.

I’ll send pics when I get the part and replace the fuel line
