I recently bought a 2001 Sea Ray 260 signature BR. The previous owner named it "MySharona". I'm 50 years old so remember the song well, However my wife is named Jennifer. I have owned many boats but never named them.. I was thinking of changing the name to Jenny 1, or something like that. Is that bad luck? Is it better to just remove the name?

That's an old superstition. We changed the name on our first boat and our current boat. I cant think of a single event that would be attributed to bad luck. If you believe that its bad luck then any unfortunate event or break down would be a self full filling prophecy. Name the boat anything you want as long as the wife loves it.
Carpe Diem

I try not to be superstitious, because that would be bad luck.

If you are concerned, just look up "Boat Naming Ceremony". Lot's of instructions on how to "safely" rename your boat. While you are at it, make sure you don't paint it green or bring a banana on board.

I changed the name on my boat that included a picture of a parrot.....it was a really bad name.... my boat hasn’t had a single problem since :)

After nearly a year, I have named the boat after her first pet. This is the result of an event and lengthy consideration. I have to leave her in charge of the boat when, eg, we have launched at a strange ramp but parking is a distance away. Better if she has fond feelings towards the creature she has on a leash rather than it being my remote responsibility.

Here's what can happen when you don't do it right.

Don't tempt fate and don't piss off Neptune. Look up the ceremony for renaming your boat and follow it to a "T".

I had an odd situation where I did the ceremony wrong and a freak windstorm kicked up (it was a bright, sunny, 80* day with winds at a few mph) within a few minutes of the ceremony. I redid it properly and the windstorm died off just as quick as it started. I'm not generally superstitious, but...

But all that aside, why wouldn't you want to do a de-naming and re-naming ceremony? Afterall, both require you to offer some bubbly to Neptune... and of course you and your guests!

Astrology, that's funny. People use star positions to determine their fate, right? I guess someone forgot to point out that the lights they see took thousands of years to reach us and what we see now is no longer there. Anyway, name your boat, my grandkids named mine

I agree. Astrology is about as important in this regard as is the concern about bad luck re-naming a boat.
