I have been reading forums and seeing utube videos on 5.0 mercruisers with Gen III cool fuel de-lamination problems. It seems that Sea Ray painted the insides of the of the Gen III fuel cool cell with paint. Now there seems to be paint delamination on some boats that is deteriorating parts that are upstream of the fuel cell such as low and high pressure pumps, fuel injectors etc. I've heard that the recommendations are to replace the Gen III cool fuel cells at approximately $1,000 a piece. This problem was apparently fixed on 2009 boats.

Does anyone having any ideas if this is a valid problem? And if so what is a part number for the Gen III cool fuel cell.

Thanks in advance.

Ralph

Yes, it's been talked about many, many times. But this falls to Merc - Sea Ray has nothing to do with it. You might be just fine, though. Are you having actual problems, or are you reading so much about that you think you have a problem? If you are, talk to your Merc dealer about it - you must have come across the goodwill where Merc will help (if there's an actual problem, of course) in all that searching! ;)

No I don’t have a problem. Was just changing my fuel filters and read about the paint delamination issue

Ralph,

Look up this mercruiser service bulletin 2009-01. It explains your issue and gives engine serial numbers that may have been affected. I had the problem and Mercruiser replaced my fuel module and 8 fuel injectors at no charge on my 05 Amberjack. You have to have a certified mercruiser mechanic make a claim.
Good Luck

Thanks Lenny. Was your boat still under warranty when they replaced your fuel module and did that include the low and high pressure fuel pumps?

It's not a warranty issue, its a service bulletin.
They pay for parts, you pay labor, if you have one of the problem ones.

I had excess fuel consumption on my 310's starboard 350 Mag MPI engine. It took a second mechanic to identify it as delaminating Cool Fuel modules (well, really, a third, since MarineMax didn't identify this boat with those problems when they inspected it).

I got both engines' fuel modules replaced and new injectors for both engines from Mercury, but I had to pay labor.

Good information, thanks Lenny

How much extra fuel where you burning? My mechanic said no issue - keep boating. It seems to be less of an issue in freshwater boats.

It burns more fuel because the chips clog the FPR and the fuel pressure sky rockets. Why would it be less of an issue with fresh water? It's the fuel side of the module that causes the problem.

It is my understanding as the housing corrodes the paint starts to peel.

Housing does corrode on the water side and eventually becomes an issue, but the flaking paint is on the cover on the fuel side.
