Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

Wondering if anyone has had a challenge to get the screw off the flood light to change the bulb?
To tight to get pliers in to hold the nut while trying to unscrew and seems to be stuck on thread. Sprayed WD40 but still wont come loose. Want to change globe (blown) with LED however cant even get it open.

New boat owners and first time boat owners. Had a tutor to teach me to drive. Things went really well.

Question regarding generator start up. We are brand new to boating so bear with me.
1. We go out on the lake (just our 3rd trip ever!) and are going to start the generator.
2. Instructions say to activate the energize button (breaker?) in the engine compartment.
3. Then start the generator and move thru the steps to power the boat i.e. sliding the "cover plates" at the bottom of the interior control panel, turning off shore power switches then turning on the generator switches.

*My question is this, The breaker / switch in the engine compartment for the generator "energize"...can that be left on and turned on and off by the inside switch. The reason I ask is because it seems cumbersome to lift the hatch to turn on the energize button each time you want to run the generator. (The inside switch I'm referring to is located to the right of the generator start button.)

*The second question is once the generator is started can I turn off the energize switch?

p.s. The generator started and ran fine and all 110v accessories switched to generator power functioned as they should.
AC/hot water heater/ etc.

This is how I do it.
1) Turn on the Generator Battery.
2) Turn on the Generator Preheat/On switch.
3) Press and hold the Generator start button until the engine turns over and you hear it running.
4) Check for water flow from the exhaust.

To switch from shore power to generator:
1) Turn OFF ALL AC BREAKERS
2) Turn off the AC shore switches.
3) Move the interlock covers over.
4) Turn on Generator line switches
5) Check AC Voltage.
6) Turn on individual circuits.
7) Turn off inlet power switches at transom
8) Disconnect shore power lines

Good rule of thumb is ALWAYS have all your 120VAC circuits off whenever switching or plugging.

As Kevin said, only one addition. Don't continuously crank when starting. Crank for 3 to 5 seconds at a time. It sometimes take up to 4 attempts for it to start. Continuous cranking can cause damage to the genny.

I have the Westerbeke 5.5 Generator in my 2002 340 Da. ....It was a hard starter from the time i got the boat...It always tool multiple attempts to start. I found the the choke linkage was binding and out of adjustment such that the choke was not full closing. I did some adjusting and straightening of the linkage and since then it starts with one attempt in about 3 secs. Runs like a dream.

Appreciate the input. If I am not happy with the BT module I am sure the head-unit will get upgraded shortly.
Question, (I will take some pictures to elaborate) there is an RCA "receptacle" outside the (to the left) of the breaker panel...it is in the cabinet right next to the breaker panel. If I'm hearing a couple of you in this thread correctly, I can't make a blue tooth device work by plugging into that receptacle without first enabling AUX...which is located behind the Clarion head unit?

I realize you weren't specifically speaking of the receptacle but we too would like to have a Blue tooth enabled system to be able to play music from our phone, ipad, etc.

Am I close?

Trying to get my my ac/heat to work
Had no water coming out the side of the boat so I flushed the system. Water flow was great strong while flushing. Hooked system back up and no water flow. I can hear the pump running. The impeller looked good. I flushed right from the thru hull. I can hook the system up and disconnect the hose right before the pump and open the thru hull and have good water coming thru
Any ideas why is doesn’t work ?
Maybe pump or impeller
Are these impellers replaceable ?

Yes you should check the impeller. Its pretty easy to take the pump apart. The impeller is normally pretty bullet proof, though.
Another thought: When you were done flushing through the through hull, that piece of hose filled with air before you clamped it down. That type of pump has a tough time self-priming. Sometimes you can loosen the fitting downstream of the pump with it running to "burp" the system and get things going again.

LClifton, first thing you want to figure out is if those RCAs in the cabinet are already plugged into the AUX-In of the head unit. I would switch the source to AUX and test. Obviously you will need to plug you test sound source, Ipod, Ihone, into those cabinet Left/Right RCAs. Hopefully you get audio, if not take the circuit panel cover down and see where they are connected. If they are not plugged into the AUX in maybe move them there. Enabling AUX is simply selecting that as the source on your head unit. The challenge is getting connections to the aux in jacks on the back of your head unit if they are not already there.

the impeller looked fine there seemed to be shell bits or something in there
I’ll try removing a line downstream to get the air out of the system
The line going from the pump to the Ac unit was being stubborn to get off so I gave up on it
Back tomorrow

Anyone have a recommendation for a dinghy davit for 2003.5 340?
I have a Hurley H3O on my 2004 340, very happy with it. Loads carries and launches my 2018 Achilles HB280DX RIB with 15hp Yamaha 2 stroke left on it just fine. The 9’2” fits just right on the boat with the stock platform as is. I also used it a lot with my 2008 Achilles SPD96 and an 8hp 2 stroke Yamaha and that worked fine too, I just moved up to the RIB this year. I did sometimes leave the motor on the soft bottom but I was always nervous of the stress on the transom, most legs of travel I’d take the motor off and just put in cockpit under table in a bag. The RIB is surely more robust. On the soft bottom I rarely left the motor when underway in any possible rough conditions, RIB no worries I did 500+ miles this year with it on there. Solid as a rock.

Just back flush it from the thru hull. Leave everything together as it should be, make sure thru hull is open and back flush with water hose for 30 seconds to a minute. This will force air out. Turn on and check for flow.

Question about the 8.1 engines: How long do the transmission coolers last compared to the oil coolers?

I have a leak in one of oil coolers (oil started showing in the Dexcool), so I have ordered new two of the Mr Cool 863904T oil coolers and will change them on both engines.
My plan is to look at the transmission coolers while I replace the oil coolers, but if some of you folks have needed to do both at similar intervals, I can switch my approach.

You probably lost the prime on the water flow. The A/C pumps are not self priming and can not pull up water on it's own. There are several ways to prime the pump and some people note that just starting the A/C while under way will force enough water up to achieve the priming.

If you have the XMD-3 there is only one set of AUX-IN plugs so if you have some in the cabinet and they work then a previous owner must have extended them for access. This would be enable when you select "AUX" for input.

If you want to add bluetooth using something like the Fusion BT-100 then you will need to attach to the RCA inputs at the back of the head unit and power the BT adapter from a 12V source that is easily available. I wired to the switched side of my stereo breaker and the ground block.

Korkie, I think you are right, the more I look at the schematic. I need to re-think this. This does not make my day.

I'm going out there tomorrow and will look closer / take some pictures.
Thank you!
