Need to replace/repair my 2001 Westerbeke 4.5 kw BCGB generator

I have a 2001 340 Sea Ray Sundancer, equipped with a Westerbeke 4.5 kw BCGB generator. The last time I started the generator it bellowed black smoke; I was told the backend burned up, that is the electrical portion of the generator.

Since this unit is approaching its 20th birthday I would tend to replace it with newer technology rather than repair it.

Are there any suggestions out there?

Replacing the backend was a consideration; I believe a rebuilt unit was about $2,700.00. Looks like this’ll be a winner project for me, I’ll keep you informed of my progress.

Yes, plus shipping.

Be aware of taking the backend apart. Westerbeke attached the armature to the engine using a steel shaft pressed to a cast aluminum fan assembly. Apparently they never considered the effects of galvanic and dissimilar corrosion.
