So I have a 44lb. galvanized anchor on my Sundancer 380. The anchor is great, but ugly brown colored now. Is there anyway I could paint it black, and it look decent? We typically anchor in soft mud, so it wouldn’t be too hard on whatever coating applied. What are my options other than a new stainless anchor? My wife also agrees that the anchor is the “ugliest” part of our 380.

You should be able to clean it up with a wire brush and spray paint it. If you still want the galvanized look you can try cold galvanizing compound. It’s basically Zink spray paint CRC makes a few versions. The bright more matches hot dipped galvanizing but has less zink in it. If you need better protection you can use the the regular Zink it then top coat with the Bright Zink It. Its not really as durable as spray paint but will help reduce corrosion.

CRC 18414 Bright Zinc-It Light Duty Instant Cold Galvanize (Net Weight: 13 oz.) 16 oz. Can https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M8NZ2U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NFaAFbK8MB489

You can also have it powder coated Depends how crazy you want to get!

Any coating will have a limited life span. Powder coat will last longer than paint but will be harder to fix when it fails. Is the Zink gone from the anchor or just discoloring?

Just discolored. It’s light brownish.

Sorry to hijack, but can these galvanized anchors be chrome plated? Has anyone done it?

I wonder if hitting it quickly with acid like ez on ez off hull cleaner would freshen it up? You would loose a little bit of Zink but it may brighten it up.

Sounds like a good option. Then coat with some Rustoleum cold galvanizing spray, from the hardware store.

I think your anchor looks fine......like an anchor that has been used by a real boater who knows how to use a boat for its intended purpose. You don't need to do a thing with it. Especially don't turn it into a sissified chrome or powder coated art object. Keep it manly.

You make a good, great point!!! I think I’m going to keep it the way it is. It shows using and age, that is for sure. Haha. You really gave me an entirely new outlook about my anchor!! Thank you.

It's "patinaed" nicely
It’s rather funny because I have pocket knives that are older and I cherish the patina. Carbon steels, etc... Really didn’t look at my anchor the same until now!!

If you gussy it up you would need to question whether or not to go out and drop the hook in some neat place. "Let's see, do I really want to get my anchor wet and dirty today? Oh, I think not. Then I'll have to paint it again and that is a lot of work." :)

That's what you tell everyone from here on in :D. I also say that I have platinum hair coming in vs. grey. Chicks dig platinum.

Very true, and we do anchor a lot!!

plating or coating it with anything is going to fail quickly if you are actually using it. Just take it and have it re-galvinized. I have done it on anchors and scuba tanks many times, not that expensive. Just look for a place near you, most cities have metal platers. Do that and it will look like new again.

Muriatic acid like mentioned earlier will clean it right up...I did mine 5 years ago and it looks the same today

OUCH.... What's wrong with a little 'boat bling'?
