02 340 sundancer with Twin 6.2L mercruiser We just bought the charmer off of a gentleman and it’s been on a trailer for a couple years so he had a mechanic go thru it to make sure of operation. He missed a few things and now they are mine to figure out. This I missed on dry land and limited run time. But with basic operations we ventured Lake Powell cautiously and found these issues.
I’ve searched posts and saw the screw switch to turn but I’m concerned that wouldn’t work on mine since there is no reference to digital hour meter. Tach is constant at 5K RPM with engine on or off.
Also port trim position doesn’t register. Always registers down.
Sync meter does register so I’m wondering what I’m missing. Bad tachometer and trim or do they have common sending unit or wiring connections/plug?
Still researching the westerbeke 4.5 genny. Finally got it running but only for about 20 minutes and then won’t start and continue to run. Looks like fuel pump maybe issue
Thank you for any guidance you can provide. And if my wording is off, I’m learning, I’ll be happy to clarify.

Sounds like a bad tach. You should be able to swap the wiring from one to the other in order to verify. (that's one of the benefits to having twins).

If genie runs until you release the pre-heat switch, the problem is likely that one of your sensors is seeing a bad value. Oil pressure, rpm, water temp (there's one other but I can't remember what it is). The preheat switch effectively bypasses these sensors, so if it runs until you release it, that indicates one of the above conditions.

By port trim, do you mean outdrive trim, or trim tabs? ether way, check and see if the outdrive or the trim tab respectively moves with the switch. If so, the sensor is probably at fault.

I’ll be trying the swap this weekend. Good suggestion. Thank you.
the genny is a weird one. Tried to order parts so I can just change parts but westerbeke is holding the whole order till an item out of stock is back in stock and no one answers the phone or returned my phone call yet. Just got an email saying they are holding order till this item is back in stock. Bummed about that.
I guess I don’t know if the gauges on the dash are for the outdrives or the trim tabs. Guess I need to figure that out so I can figure out what sensor I need to look for. Everything adjusts with switches
Hopefully I’ll have good news this weekend or more questions
Thank you for your help and time

Swapped the tach and the one that worked On stbd worked on the port. Port one didn’t work on stbd and twisting the setting knob didn’t get anything working. So now to find a new tach and hour meter. Any suggestions?
Thank you
Replaced water temp, exhaust temp, and oil pressure switches and still only got one run of about 20 minutes So now I guess the fuel pump? It runs with preheat button held but revs up and down. Release preheat and it will run 5 more seconds and then die out. Is the preheat running a second fuel pump for priming? I’m all confused and am thinking about changing the pronunciation of westerbeke to a four letter word

All the preheat switch does is bypass the sensors; oil pressure, temp, rpm, etc. This is so the gen can run until the above sensors read their nominal values. If I remember correctly, one of those sensors will open up (shut down the engine), if RPM doesn't remain real close to the correct value (I believe 1800).

My guess is the governor is malfunctioning or needs adjustment.
