You have to research what you have and what will work. Some 2001 are already smartcraft capable, my 2000 was not

I added one to each engine, connected to my gps

Wow, looks awesome! Did you do that yourself? That’s definitely over my head, but I’d consider paying someone to do it. Can you give me an idea of what something like that would cost? I have outdated electronics, so I’d have to upgrade that too...

It’s all pretty easy, to add it was $800ish

My MFD is old (already in the boat)but it just needs to be nmea2k a used one is $4-500 on eBay

my boat had the nmea2k network but that’s really simple, cost about $100 for the materials

I added the fox marine gateways for the 800

what I love is when I fill my fuel tanks up, I can set the gps to 275 gallons and the gateways monitor the fuel burn and deduct it from the full tank (275)

but also your phone will blue tooth to the gateways and get more info

my starboard gauge says it’s running at 175-180, but the gateway has the actual temperature at 163-165... gauges are that far off....

Simple process, just have to figure out what engines you have

I have the Mercruiser SC5000 tachs for my 8.1's. I can scroll through and look at all my engine parameters which is way more accurate than the gauges.

@Shark look through the 290 thread from around this time last year or slightly before (june 2019). I added the Fox gateways to our 290 with 5.7EFIs and hooked them into the MFD. Amazing devices

Will do Ryan, thanks. Do you know what info I would need, to confirm they can be added to my 2001 5.0L EFI engines?

The general 290 thread, or the 1998 one?

Iirc

I called sea ray and gave them my engine serial numbers (I believe. Could of been hull I’d number, but I don’t think so). With that, they were able to tell me which mefi I had, with that I could order the correct gateways

it just depends on which MEFI version you have. Mine were MEFI1, but to confirm you can unscrew the two little screws holding the ECM in the black box on the engine and look at the sticker on the back. Fox-Marine site has a bunch of pictures on each version as well

The throttle only buttons felt a little sticky, so we just took the boat out for a quick test spin.

Gauge stayed at 20 psi from starting through 3800 rpm (port went from 30 to 40), which is where the starboard engine maxed out for some reason (happened once before with a bunch of people on board, and never again until today).

On the way back, after maybe 10 mins at 3800rpm, gauge dropped to slightly under 20 psi, and when I throttled down for the canal, it dropped to 0, and stayed there.

Docked the boat, and opened the hatch with engines running - no knocking or lifter tapping noises, smoke, or anything else abnormal. Very weird. Going to see if I can get the sender out.

UPDATE: Checked oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, and had almost 50 psi at startup! Seems to be the sender, so I ordered one and will replace it this weekend. What a relief! Thank you all for the advice and suggestions, as always!
