i currently live and boat on south shore of long island in new york. my house is on a canal and i have 50ft of bulkhead in my backyard. i definitely consider myself lucky, but new york is just getting so out of control with taxes and politics that im considering a relocation. up here we have may through october to boat, and we take advantage of that by spending as many weekends as possible sleeping on our boat in different marinas. we can easily get to a bunch of different marinas, and we have also ventured to montauk, block island, atlantic city etc. we are currently running a 2005 340 sundancer with plans to move up in the future. sometimes i open a bottle of wine at night and search up and down the east coast looking for waterfront property in other parts of the country. usually from key largo up through north carolina as this would extend the season for us. i cant seem to find any areas where i can get a house for under 700k on the water with boat in backyard and have various boating destinations to choose from. maybe someone can recommend a place that this exists??? ive even read in boat us about top boating places to live and didnt seem to walk away from the articles with much to show for it. food for thought...

Well... We live in St. Paul, MN... Just listed our 48 sundancer and we are working towards plans to live-aboard our next boat somewhere Nashville or south from there.

We too are from Long Island and also try to boat the entire month of Oct. Just this past weekend we did a trip to Greenport Long Island for four days a five hour trip for me. But i agree with you The Tax's here are out of control. We have been talking about a move for years . Now their is grandchildren in the picture and they love going on Pa Pas Boat!I think we will be here a while longer... lol

You guys ever heard of New Zealand??
i have a buddy that met a girl from Melbourne Aus while on vacation in Europe. she came with him to the states and hated everything about this place, so they moved to Melbourne 5-6 years ago and he he has no regrets, loves it. The Aussies think everyone in the states is nuts with the guns, racism, and politics. Way different over there.
Biggest problem is if you fall overboard you get eaten by the sharks pretty quick.

As an ex NYer, I love being in the SE coast. Carolinas thru North Florida. Problem is, so does everybody else, these areas are growing in leaps and bounds and have become mostly more expensive than NY. Good luck in the hunt.

I just bought a house in New Bern, NC on the water with a dock.

May not get waterfront for your budget but were building a house near Sarasota and the boat is 35 mins away and mins from the Gulf. We also wanted the boat in the backyard but for the money we built a brand new home the way we wanted it
30-40 min drive isn’t so bad.

I recommend anywhere in FL. There is great variety in boating environments. Some areas are less crowded (NE & NW FL) some have better boating (Gulf Coast, Keys). Some are cooler than others (NE & NW). All have no state income tax! Many places have canals like you are accustomed to in NY. Boating is year 'round. So is maintenance (monthly diver, etc.). And you need a workable hurricane plan irrespective of where you are in the SE USA, not just FL.

How and how often you boat, and what you do with the boat, will determine a lot.

The housing market in FL is hot. Nice properties, priced realistically, don't stay on the market for much more than a day. Offers over full price are the norm. Find a local agent and listen to their recommendations. We have friends who missed out on their 'dream house' because they didn't listen to the agent and waited 6 hours to make an offer. This is more common than not. One friend who lost out on one house, then offered $25K over asking price on a $600K home, while she was still in the home. She got it, having beat about 8 other offers.

Then, in housing what goes up eventually comes down. We all have to be prepared for that.

Quint, that's awesome. I love New Bern. Company I used to work for had a plant there and I would visit often. Loved staying at the Sheraton (it's a Double Tree now) on the river. Beautiful marina there. Lots of great restaurants downtown too, especially the Chelsea! Are you on the Trent or the Neuse?

I love my home and city of Ft Myers... great weather and boating access etc..

Thanks for all the responses! In new bern do u feel there are many marinas to go spend weekends at around there?
Marinas in New Bern with Oriental also nearby and a bit further is the Outer banks and Beaufort , Morehead City Area.

Love to watch the fishing charters returning at Morehead City. We were down a few weeks ago.

Love the Chelsea! Been going there for 20 plus years.

We're on Long Island too. My wife and I talk all the time about where else we would go when the time comes. The considerations we face are:
  • I'm in the middle of my working career, and my job is on LI. But - the remote work thing may ease that.
  • My inlaws. They are also here, and the rest of her siblings are not. I actually like my inlaws so we're cool there.
  • My kids are still in school an I don't want to take them out.
  • My wife's doctor is in NYC so we can't be too far away.
We've kind of decided that where we end up depends a lot on where our kids go. We thought perhaps Connecticut where 2 of 3 siblings are, but its colder and the boating season is that much shorter. I have zero interest in Florida at this time. I'm not a native LI'er, so being "captive" on an island too about 15 years to get used it. Having a boat is what made it bearable.
It actually feels like home now.
