Captains I’m having to pull my cockpit side panels to fix the dry rot wood. Has anyone done this? Any words of wisdom that I need to know?

Attached with screws or Christmas Trees? Never done this but my advice would be to GO S-L-O-W!

Wood, it was a bit of both. The vinyl covering is in very good shape.

any recommendations on what wood to use? I’m thinking of birch and using resin on the back side

I would look into using 1/8 inch ABS sheet plastic. You can get it at TAP plastics. Easily cut and formed and is completely weather proof.
Carpe Diem

Yes I had some soft areas in the side walls out on deck some years back with STAR board , Remade the pieces by using old parts as the templet. I used a Router with a pattern bit to make the cuts came out perfect! It's very doable just take your time. It will never rot again:cool:

If you can get the old panel off without damaging it to badly, use it as a template for the new one. You will probably be able to reuse the old vinyl. Make sure to use monel or stainless staples.

I did get the old ones off with very little problems. I’ve started to remove the vinyl and the foam backing.

My plan is to cut the new wood and the cutouts this weekend. I have no plans to reuse the vinyl. I have two 4x8 sheets of veneer coming in in about two weeks.Get that on and do the cut outs. Dry fit it all back on the boat then bring it back to the house for a coat of resin.

I still need to remove the carpet, shorten the bolts holding the arch, and paint the fiber glass.
