In my early days of computers I got used to working with the DOS prompt.

I'm now using Windows 10 and Chrome. Can a user still get to the DOS prompt? If so, how?

Yes you can, I use the search (magnifying glass), and type command, and you should see a “command prompt” Item in the results list, click it, and you should get a DOS prompt. Now, what are you trying to do with it?

or type cmd in the search box. There is also Powershell.

The CMD function is there as noted. DOS commands will still work there. But where Windows used to ride on top of DOS, it truly is it’s own OS now. The CMD window is more of an illusion in the was Windows used to be.

I just threw away during the shutdown my lists of DOS prompts I had in a file. My how things have changed...:)

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this question I posed, but thanks for the responses. I didn't know a search on CSR for the term DOS wouldn't bring up this post and I couldn't find it.

I want to get to the DOS command prompt to run a defrag program if that's still possible.

GFC, In "File Explorer", if you right click on your drive (OS C: for example) and go to "Properties", there is a "Tools" tab where you can "Optimize and defragment" the drive.

I would not do this. Most PCs have solid state drives, and there is almost no need for defragmentation and it lowers the life of SSDs. They typically have a limited number of writes, and if you constantly try to defragment, in theory you drive down the lifespan. If you have a PC without an SSD, go buy one, 7 second boots are a wonderful thing... Windows tries to be smart and detect SSD and reduce the defragmenting performed, and the way it defragments, but recent issues have been introduced and it is defragging too often... I would just avoid it with SSDs.
