I boat on the Long Island Sound in Port Washington.

I consider myself to be somewhat mechanically inclined so, I would like to take a course(s) to increase my knowledge of boat engine repair/maintenance. I'd like to be able to diagnose and/or repair some issues/problems myself

Does anyone know who might offer Engine repair/maintenance courses in my general vicinity?

Start by getting and reading the Service manual for your engine. Probably service manual 23 with about a 1000 pages of information..

The Jones Beach Power Squadron on the South Shore offers a Engine maintenance course

Good for you.
Remember, you don’t need to be an expert marine mechanic, just be an expert on YOUR boat.

+1 to what Scoflaw said. I found the easiest way on my boat was break everything down by system. Engine, transom assembly, out drive, Vacuflush system, black water tank, Potable water system, Heat and A/C etc.
There is no brain surgery going on, but there are definitely a few things you'll want to clarify along the way.
