Using the emergency start feature

Great info folks - Here's my situation. Turned port key - nothing - held down "emergency start switch". Engine cranked and fired up and continued to run as long as I had the switch held down - as soon as I let up on the switch, port engine idles down / stalls. Can repeat this multiple times in a row - same results - thoughts?

It sounds like your port batteries are totally dead. Using emergency switch you used your STBD batteries to fire up the port side. Once you let go the switch, you relied on your PORT batteries, which are still dead. You need juice to keep the engine running. As a proof of concept, move the batts from the STBD side to PORT and see if it fires up and stays running. Based on what you described, preliminary conclusion is pointing to a need for new batts on the PORT side.

Thanks for the quick reply! Where might I find the "circuit switches". I was down in the bilge changing my fuel water separator just before this began to occur. Perhaps I hit something on a panel on the bilge forward bulkhead, with my butt? Problem was not there before I went under the hatches, just when I went to start the engines afterwards.

Ok, on my boat at the electrical panel there are the keys and 2 circuit switches that all have to be turned on. Years ago when I first got the boat and I was in a hurry, I couldn't get one of the engines to start unless I pushed the the jumper switch... It turned out I neglected to make sure one of the circuit switches was completely open.

Thank you - yes on my dash I have my 2 keys situated on the left and my "electrical panel" / dash panel on the right whereas I have to push in the "circuit breaker" button to activate the function of each engine for starting. I did ensure they were both pushed in / engaged but maybe an intermittent problem with the port breaker. Perhaps the one breaker being off is overridden by using the emergency start switch allowing it to fire up - I will review tomorrow - Thanks!

Much appreciated - just came out of nowhere as both were running / starting like a charm 1 hour previously. Will have a look see tomorrow and report back - Thanks for the info!

The port engine breaker is tripped or there is a fusible link on the port engine that is blown. The emergency start switch is just feeding current from to the port engine thus enabling it to crank and run.

That same thing happened to me! Turned out the helm start switch was bad. Replaced thru FP, no more problem. IF you order it, be sure to get the switch AND actuator as the old actuator won't fit the new switch. I found out the hard way.
