I just replaced the Mercruiser 454 engine in my Sea Ray 268. Before I put it in the water I wanted to add a cooling system. I have a heat exchanger from a Crusader 454 engine (part number 97930).
Can I make that work for my application?

Before you make your conversion, how much of the history of your new engine do you know? Anti-freeze in coolant can react with residual salt in engines that have been used in salt water and turn to a substance with a jello like consistency.

Obviously if your engine was new, or remanufactured where the block and heads were extensively degreased, it’s not an issue. If the engine was acquired as a used engine and installed with minor repairs you might wish to rethink your plan.

Thank you for your post. It is a re-manufactured engine. I’m in salt water and I want to do a 1/2 coolant system.

Brackets and hoses and a stat housing and you should be fine.

I'm sure your smart enough. Just make sure the exchanger is in good working order. It would be a shame if you did all that work and the exchanger had a leak.

was that x-changer part of a full system or half ? you have to pressure test it, both sides why are you just going to use it for a half system, you know as well as I that if there is a problem it most likely comes from the exhaust failing, too bad they don't make dry joint exhaust for big blocks, I wish I would of known that before I did my repower I would of went with a 6.2L instead of another 7.4L, I am trying to incorporate a full fwc system, but I'm having trouble sealing my intake manifold, I have a bigger heat exchanger thou, good luck with yours

yes you are probably right, but you still have to pressure test both sides of the exchanger, also was it a rear installation ?
