Today I found myself agreeing to move a friend's 400SD out of his slip to accommodate dredging operations as he was out of town and did not want the marina staff moving the boat. Light wind and no current and I had another marina neighbor on the dock to grab a line for me. I have been operating my 44DB for 5 years and some three hundred hours so moving a 400 SD should be child's play. I was taken back by how little authority the props had and how much power I had to carry to get the boat the behave and lateral to a side tie. Not a big deal but its just makes me really appreciate the power and torque my 8.3 ltr Cummins and 24 inch props have.

Having owned both diesel and gas boats I still get a chuckle when I read someone pontificating about how supposedly superior diesel boats are when it comes to docking.

The skill in effectively using either system is what counts. But hey, there's the fun in perpetuating OWT's on forums.

I think its more what you are used to. Drive the same boat for 5 years then getting into a different one will feel strange.

Screw four sticks! Only two here....electric throttle and shift is where it's at. So easy to add power while docking, if needed.

Maneuvering a 72 Marlow is different than a 17 Aquasport, which is different than a 19 jet drive, which is different than a 90 Fedship, which is different than a 13 Nautilus, which is, different than a 292' schooner. It's all in your hands, and clarity of your tools, Captain.
(But the 370 with 3116's is a WORLD above a 370 with MAG MPI) Experience. So, I agree. Gassers need goose to go.

This is what I love about the forum. One can make an innocuous post about a boat handling experience and spark some friendly discourse. It helps pass the time and take my mind off the uncertain future of our political situation.

Hah. Sorry I started us down this course :):) Where I boat it is now our winter layup period. And...well...you know how us northerners can get when the boats are on the hard.

And really, lets be honest, it's only once in a blue moon (LAST NIGHT!!! ha) that us gassers can claim any real advantage over diesels. Even this thread is a stretch but I had to take my shot!

Its all good, a couple of weeks ago I had the same friend take my buyers out on a sea trial and haul out delivery as I was working. He has no diesel experience so I gave him a quick check out the evening before. He put me to shame when he docked my boat taking a slightly different approach and did not touch the thruster! I liken it to learning to fly in a tail dragger and transitioning into to a tri-cycle gear aircraft. You gasser guys do have my respect no doubt!
Cheers
