- 60,820 total staffed beds, 25% available

Similar stats from Wisconsin:
https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/capacity.htm
Only 13.5% of ICU beds available in the state.
7 day average COVID patients in hospital 1,272. Rising.
the 7-day moving average of COVID patients in the ICU is 317 patients. ICU patients made up 24.5% of hospitalized COVID patients.

I personally know about 10-15 people that had it. All recovered and most just stayed at home and recovered. One was a 92 year old man in our bowling league, 2 others from my league too. They all got it March 10th while we were at bowling (well at least 1 had it when they got there that night). One was about 55-60 and had had a lung removed about 10 years ago due to smoking. He spent about 10 days in ICU but is 100% recovered now. I see him at bowling every week now. A family of 4 a few houses away all got it. They parents are in their 60's. My best friends ~19 year old daughter got it about a month ago. The other night he said it was basically just a bad flu but she is young and in good shape. I heard there were about 5 others on our street that had it too but hadn't heard names but all of them survived.

Things here haven't changed much. I only know of 1 person that lost their job and that is my step-sons girlfriend that is a hair dresser. Me, my wife, and all 4 kids all continued working as have all of my friends and family. Wife is a teacher, I'm a System Security Engineer that has been working from home for 5 years. Oldest step-son is a Cpl Detective at the local PD (32 years old), other step-son is a supervisor at a plastics manufacturing plant (be 31 next week) and they began making temporary plastic partitions for temporary hospitals. Son is a safety manager for a large construction company (27) and daughter is a financial advisor (26). She was hit the hardest since people were holding onto their money and she is paid commission but she owns several rental properties and made it through.

When it all started we stayed home as much as we could but the last 4 months or so we have been back to business as usual. We wear masks when we have to but still go and do everything we used to if it is open. Me and my wife are both 51.

Those Wisconsin numbers are interesting. As a neighboring state, we get Wisconsin "reports" every night on the news. They report that Green Bay/Door County is getting hammered -- complete with footage of overwhelmed doctors and hospitals. Yet the map shows the area with no change over two weeks. The Fox Valley region right below has an 18% decline. The facts and news don't seem to align.

Say it isn’t so!
When I watch Fox and Friends, I get the same feeling as I do when I am getting my hair cut and the 20 something hairdresser starts a conversation about politics. Naive and simplistic views on complicated subjects. Very few facts and lots of playing to the target audience.

People like dirty laundry. Kick ‘em when they’re up kick ‘em when they’re down.

Thank you Alnav and Third Edition.

If I am reading the charts correctly, it is saying that there have been zero cases of any of the influenza strains after week 15 of 2020? That's the 3rd week of March. When the bulk of the lockdowns started. I find that a bit hard to believe.

Worse case scenario, Covid is 7-12x more deadly than the flu. 99% of people under 50 have nothing to worry about beyond spreading it to someone who is susceptible due to a comorbidity. Most people with a comorbidity know about that comorbidity. We should be able to unlock the economy, ditch the mask mandates, and quarantine only people who have a comorbidity. The healthy would be able to go about their lives and develop herd immunity.

I heard an interesting statement today from a doctor who said that Covid seems to be mutating into less deadly strains. Viruses that kill the host cannot survive. I sure wish I knew more about how and why viruses mutate. In the grand scheme of things, that statement makes a lot of sense.

I'm 100% sure that we are not getting the real story.

One possibility for the demise of the flu worldwide this year is that everything is being counted as Covid-19. Just one of many possibilities, perhaps.

Could also be that the washing, social distancing, and masks and everything we are doing to prevent COVID is having a significant impact on lesser forms of influenza. Doc’s have been saying for many years about hand washing and all the other recommendations to reduce spread of flu. Most people are being more COVID careful which would really slow a less virulent strain.

I think Creekwood is on the right track. Looking at the example of New Zealand, they have had only had 25 covid deaths so far as opposed to an average 500+ influenza deaths. This year they have had only officially recorded 6 flu positives and no deaths. So, even if they had flu deaths were mistaken for covid, they would still have a 99.5% reduction.
Near extinction' of influenza in NZ as numbers drop due to lockdown

Who knew that just wearing masks, social distancing, and washing hands could eliminate flu deaths worldwide?

Looks like some parts of the world will never again go without masks, washing hands & social distancing (looking at you, Michigan). This is only a partially sarcastic post.

I always wondered why some Asians living in Canada, particularly those from mainland China, often wear masks in public. I was told that it is because of air pollution in China. I expect there have been viral outbreaks we have not heard about in the west in the past in China.

Back when I was frequenting Asia, 20+ years ago, mask-wearing was by no means unusual. I understand the SARS/MERS/Avian Flu experiences made it even more prevalent. I suspect some amount of mask-wearing will become the norm in North America moving forward. It won't necessarily be mandated but will become a personal choice.

I've a buddy who is an OB/GYN in Green Bay. They are pretty full. His assessment this morning: His hospital is doing 500+ tests a day with a 20-50% positive rate. Most are not sick, but they are at capacity for COVID beds. They are sending people home with O2, steroids, and platelet inhibitors unless/until pulse ox less than 90. Then they are admitted. Death rate is lower than other areas.

Ironically wife and I were watching TV about a year ago and they showed China and everyone wearing masks. I made the comment to her how bad it would suck to have to wear a mask all the time.

I was in China last October and spent a bunch of time with my team over there. This was before all of the Covid stuff broke, and there were people wearing masks when outdoors, I would guess it was around 50% in the big cities, less when out of them. I asked some of the people on my team what the motivation to wear masks came from and they told me it was one of three things, likely in this order:
1) Pollution
2) Privacy (there are cameras EVERYWHERE, and they want to try to have at least some privacy when walking around)
3) Illness

Thought that was an interesting data point, especially now, and the order has probably flipped.

Hadn't thought about the privacy issue, but with a communist country that imprisons its people for anything considered subversive, I can understand that.

Good to see your economy is doing OK. Canada is not well where we are. High unemployment and no jobs. My son is an engineer laid off two months ago. His comment was there are 300 people applying for any job. Daughter has an international MBA from France and is a Geophysicist and has been off work for 2 years (She was in oil).

Yep. Best friends preacher is a hospital admin and he told me back when this first started that his preacher told him they get $39,000 for every COVID patient. You think they aren't gonna go after that easy money?

According to California morbidity statistics......Covid has "cured" heart disease as a killer......at least according to the Cause of Death certificates. They may be some on CSR that disagree but the CARES Act made it very easy for hospitals to claim the Federal money for treating Covid patients.
