MY quicksilver 7.5kw gas genny is locked up. Removed plugs poured various lubricants in the cylinders let it set for week or so, will not turn over, Just goes clunk when trying to start. Removed starter and bench tested good, was able to get pry bar on the flywheel after starter removed, engine will not budge. Since this is a 1994 Quicksilver, and parts are almost non-existent, was thinking of removing it and replacing it was something similar. Any recommendations on what to replace it with? Boat is 1994 350 Express Bridge. Anyone have experience removing the Genny and what is the degree of difficulty. Thanks

If it is the engine it is a Nissan Micra Rockauto still has some parts for them. 988cc engine, junk yard might have one.
I got a price to replace ours once 7K for new one and 6K to install. Lots of plumbing and base work plus electrical.

Are you looking at new or used?

I faced a similar dilemma on my boat 8 years ago. Short of rebuilding the Nissan engine it was just far easier to buy and drop in a Westerbeke 7.0 BCGD. It weighed 100 pounds less, used less gas and was super quiet compared to the Quicksilver.

Plumbing was easy and the only work was running a new remote harness to the electrical panel and connecting it up.

My cost was $5,500 complete (it was a boat show demo unit) but that was 8 years ago. My unit uses a carb and all the new ones are fuel injection.

It would be a tougher decision today but even rebuilding the Nissan engine doesn't address a Quicksilver 27 year old generator back end and how long it will last.

Sorry to hear that you may end up replacing your generator. If it does come to that - I would be interested in the old unit, even if it is in pieces. I have a 1992 unit and having spare parts would be helpful at times.

We had our generator fail coming back from the north. We have 10 six volt golf cart batteries as house batteries. Only thing we can not run on them is the watermaker and AC. Depending on how you cruise you may find a large inverter and lots of batteries will work for you. We have 100 gallons of water and the two of us were good for 4 days with very short showers. Batteries can be charged off engine alternator or you can put in a 100 AMP alternator dedicated to the house batteries.

Going to attempt to remove the quicksilver this weekend an see if it is salvagable. Thanks for the info.

Both used or new. I know a used one is probably not the way to go, there is a reason it is used. What are the replacement recommendations. Kohlar, westerbeke, onan?

I believe Westerbeke is the only gas genset available new now. And their prices reflect that.

When I bought my Phasor, the dealer was also a Westerbeke dealer. The diesel genset was cheaper, and I would have to wait to get a gas Westerbeke.

On used sets, unless I knew where it came from, you could be buying someone else's problem.

I have a 7.5KW Quicksilver in my 91' 350 DA. I had a few electrical issues with it last year i was able to sort out, and then it has seemed to do fine since then. I have around 720 hours on it now, i have contemplated trying to find a clean newer used unit to replace it with as i know the Quicksilvers are problematic and we run the generator a lot. I was told a new Westerbeke unit would run me around 15k (with me installing myself). I'm going to use next season as a test, as i think we will put several hundred hours on it over the season. If i keep having issues i will bite the bullet and replace it.

The engine part of your genset shouldn't pose any problems as long as it's maintained. Parts are availble for that.

The back end of the genset can be rebuilt by Broward Armature for about $3k.

Great info with that Broward Armature. Our Quicksilver Gen in 87 340 Express runs and starts and puts out no voltage. I haven't contacted them yet. Curious if they can actually repair the electrical portion of a Quicksilver Gen as we have been told no parts are available and we should scrap it. Full new Gen installation being so expensive compared to boat value. Boat is in indoor storage currently here in Minnesota. They have them packed in like sardines!

Call them, they are responsive and can tell you exactly what they can do. The "back end" (electrical side) is fairly standard, it's the engine side where parts are getting hard to find.

We have QS 5.0 in '91 310. Been great. Had a no output issue I think caused by long term water drip on control panel. Back end is Generac based. Replaced a part of control panel. Solved problem. My generator guy thought they were great units. Very quiet at 1800 rpm. I'll bet part is available still. If need more info I'll dig up part #.
