I found a 2006 280DA (twin 4.3 MPI w/ Alpha gen3) from a private seller. He is in the middle of a divorce and the boat has been on the hard and winterized for the last 2 seasons. He stated it needs ALL the regular maintenance items (manifolds, risers, ect) and it has been uncovered so the canvas enclosure and eisenglass are in poor shape. Cockpit interior is very nice but needs cleaning. he has left the portholes on the sides open and the companionway was open for a time so there was water in the area of the shower bilge (area was full-previous post) that has sat for a long time and seeped into the cabin sole carpet (staining, discoloration, ect...) the cabin has a slightly humid feel (not a strong smell) and there is staining in the forward areas on starboard and port which looks like water ingress but no idea where that was leaking from as no ports that far up the bow (below storage areas in front of tv and in front of hanging locker) I vacuumed out the shower bilge area which seemed sealed and got approx. 4-5 gallons of water. couldn't find any ports to check any other bilge areas except engine room. I performed a once over and there is rust around the manifold/riser seams (to be expected) but look relatively clean overall. There are two hoses running from the port motor to a white box I assume is the water heater and one is free from the unit (appears the barb corroded so bad it broke free from the unit. I plan to have a surveyor friend look at the vessel but not sure, due to location of boat and cold weather, if I can run the engines at all. From what I gather Im looking at approx. $7500 in parts to do full tune ups, circ. pumps, exhaust/cooling components, bellows and impellers. The canvas is the front visor with side windows and slant back aft curtain and will need major repairs (zippers/velcro/eisenglass) if not full replacement. Is there any specific issues or problem areas these boats have I should look for. I think the price is looking to be $25000 to account for the known issues. With the current market i feel is decent but I would appreciate any thoughts on this deal? Sorry for the long winded explanation and thanks for the input!

Have you pulled the dip sticks and checked the oil for signs of water ? Also the oil in the out drives !

dipsticks are clean. reservoirs for drives are in range and clean. have not checked oil in drives yet.

Pretty big risk if you can’t sea trial it. Look up the going rate on a few of those boats in nice shape, and see how much that leaves you in repairs. If you get within 75%-80% of a clean running boat then it is not much of a bargain.

That’s a lot of work to get you where you would have been if you bought one in good shape.

Unless you get it for 35% to 40% of what that boat goes for in good condition I'd walk away. Even when you add up the knowns, there are the unknowns that are certainly there and they will add up.

I don’t trust anyone’s story, I’d run from this boat it smells of a deeper disturbing story. I bet it’s not the ole’ we’re getting divorced story. Sorry doesn’t feel right

I don't know anybody that would leave their portholes open intentionally for any period of time (if not on the boat).

That much water on the inside for that period of time, there has got to be mold someplace?

I think I'd pass on this myself. Unless he'll take $10k and a case of beer for it :)

This is what I'm feeling too....seems shady!
