Huge fire at Toledo beach Marina right now

I’ll await my Safe Harbor email reminding us of not leaving your boat in a building with batteries connected or plugged in. :/

Cant imagine anybody would be in there but man that is a big building, has to be a lot of boats in there. Sad

This is my worst fear during winter layup. And also why I always unplug other peoples boats if I see 'em plugged in during winter...

Gasoline and fiberglass, 1" spacing between boats....they don't stand a chance.

How would you even begin to figure out how it started ?

Wow, I feel really bad for the boat owners who winter store there. I can't even image what I would feel, if I had a boat stored there and saw this story.

Wow. That looks like a huge storage facility. Must be hundreds of boats that were in there. I guess its only "stuff" but our boats are like family members in a weird way. Very sad.

It would be absolutely heart breaking to get that call in December (or ever!) knowing what it likely means for your upcoming boating season.

Can you imagine what this must do to the local used boat market after the insurance companies send out those checks? That's a big building...gotta be a lotta boats in there.

If you compare to the sailboats beside it... potentially there is 100+ boats in there... if it’s anything like my storage, countless dinghies and golf carts tucked in between

yes, very sad to see this
As much as trailering can be a pain, I just cant bring myself to leave my boat in the water or common storage.
I can look out my window right now and see it...

Question for those that winter their boats in a facility - Is there a list or check list that the marina requires to be done on the boat before it's is laid up to "safe" the boat? Do these facilities have sprinkler systems?
Wondering if these fires are generally caused by boats or the facility or work in the facility....

Im at another Safe Harbor marina. We are required to disconnect batteries and never leave anything plugged in. Now that you mention it, i see zero sprinklers up there.

Our facility doesn't have any policy, at least not enforced.
Sad, there is no reason whatsoever to leave a boat plugged in or have batteries connected over the winter. If I want to work on the boat, I just plug in an extension cord. The charger/converter runs any 12v lights, electronics, etc. don't have to put the cables back on the batteries. Unplug when i leave. I hate seeing other boats plugged in in our building.
No sprinklers, we're cold storage.

Scary situation good no one was hurt.
Our boat is stored in a large yard outside all the time except when not in use. When we put it in storage I send the marina a list of fuels and amounts that include gas on swim platform for dinghy, fuel type and volume in the main tanks, propane and the location and how the boat is left. IE plugged in battery charger and any heaters left on in the boat. I put four 100 watt air dry heaters in the boat. They do not request the information I do because the fire department would need to know if there was a fire. I have done one fire investigation on oil storage tanks. It was as bad as this boat storage. To figure out how it started you walk the site, figure out how it was built, look for areas that you know could have been a source of ignition. We had detail drawings of the facility and had built similar so had good feel for the site. With a shed full of boats unless there was a detail drawing of the boat locations, what fuel was in them and what was left on it would be a long process to figure out how it all started.

It was already a hot (no pun intended) market for us up here in Michigan. We share the same boat market as Toledo. I can't imagine what it's going to be like in the Spring '21 now.

How long does it usually take for insurance companies to issue checks after something like this.
