1998 SR 290 Sundancer - Little Ducky II

Boat is back together and ready for relaunch.

Because of the current weather relaunch is going to be tomorrow along with a good sea trial to make sure everything is running correctly.

A bit of news:

I've been after them for a good diagnosis on why this happened. They first said the impeller could have failed but when they went to change it the impeller was in good shape. Both were changed just to be on the safe side since the last time they were serviced was back in 2012.

So then they went to fire up the new engine and it would not stay running. Found the engine control module was dead. Once replaced the engine fired off and runs great. So now they think the ECM died when I was cruising at 4000 RPM and sucked water back through the exhaust when it shut down abruptly.

Thoughts?

i don’t know, did they find water in the cylinders? Cutting out randomly doesn’t explain the indication of an overheat. I know you said the gauge pegged but even if that was wrong you said you could feel the heat and smell oil. Unless the ecm went completely haywire I don’t know how a failed ecm could cause the failure you had.

id be interested in what they found when tearing the engine down to determine the cause of death.

So 2 out of water repairs this year cost me almost more then I paid for the boat. :(

I'm glad I like the old barge and it gives me so much joy when I'm floating around social distancing from everyone else.

I do however have one new transom, one new engine, the other engine was completely serviced (while you're there kind of thing), a dry bilge, both outdrives serviced with new impellers and lube, and new bottom paint.

I should be good for a few years.

Now where is my winning lottery ticket. :p

It's getting close.

Flushed the fresh water system of antifreeze and turned on the hot water tank for my shower tonight. :)

HVAC running and cabin cooling off nicely.

Is it boating season yet?

BTW had to prime the AC pump for the 1st time since I actually winterized the system this year. After the HI PS error thinking it would just prime itself I popped the top of the strainer basket to get some water flowing and when the pump turned on it took a big gulp and off it went. ;)

Well my boating season is starting off on the right foot.

My boat insurance coverage through the Travelers Insurance Company with their mechanical breakdown coverage is going to cover the entire cost of the engine replacement. It was a slow process but I finally got word yesterday a check is in the mail.

I'm so glad the failure was not anything that was overlooked maintenance wise or this might have gone another way.

When this check is in my hands I'm going to kiss my insurance agent. :)

that’s great, I’ve been shopping around to see if anyone would give me mechanical breakdown on our 410 since it’s about a $75k engine room. So far no one will since it’s more than 15 years old. Is your policy through travelers?

Is your policy through travelers?

Yes it is. Travelers Boat and Yacht. I had that same trouble when I was buying the 98 290 DA. The same guy who finalizes all the sales at the marina is also a travelers agent so he worked up a policy for me during the closing.

Right now the policy I have is with an agreed value at what the boat sold for but after all my repairs and getting caught up on all the deferred maintenance from the previous owner I'm going to consider upping that value. BTW the mechanical breakdown coverage was included at no additional expense.

PM me on what they say about insuring your 410.

I just called them and they send me the breakdown T&C's to read through, they said no issue covering it and as long as 'recommended maintenance' is followed the powertrain would be covered, less any wear and tear. Now, if an engine wears out and needs a repower that certainly wouldn't be covered but it sounds to me like a catastrophic failure would be. I'll PM you more info once I have it

Ducky, what was the final cost of a swap out motor? This way when i spend all the time the admiral thinks is silly i can say. " would you rather drop $ )

mine was all-in 6k when I did the port side. that was haul, block for a week, R&R, and a complete rebuild with dyno (pistons, valves, reman block, turned crank, new disti, reuse all bolt ons)

To clean this thread up a little I placed a link to the repair along with what maintenance I had done to the other motor and outdrive while it was out of the water. I just noticed a small error on this invoice so I'll have to give the shop a call for the refund.

Here's the ticket for the repair and other work done:

Awesomen to hear. My madon voyage has been posponed due to rain. But tue looks good and hope i have the same. No way im going in the water tho. Jersey water still way to cold

So awesome to see; A 290 on plane with smooth water is something special. Hope the ducks enjoyed the ride!

Unfortunately with the changing weather conditions yesterday it was smooth heading in certain directions and write cap swells in the other. Made for a challenging day on the water and reminded me that the Keurig coffee maker can fly..... off the counter that is.

Shoot, I grew up swimming in the North Atlantic off NH and ME. If it ever got to 70 I'd be surprised! It averages 62 even in August.
My wife took me swimming at Old Orchard Beach in Maine 40 years ago - Sheez, I've never been so cold! I remember @rondds diving in at the Sea Ray AC gathering one year - all I can say is WOW!
