My ancestors on my fathers side came on the mayflower but I have a friend who had lineage from the niña.

I lived just south of there (10 miles) in a little town called Lompoc for seven years when we were designing and building the Space Shuttle launch pad at Vandenberg AFB - 1984 to 1991. I still travel there occasionally for business. A couple of points of interest - the point off Vandenberg is called Honda Point where the largest peace time Navy disaster occurred; nine Navy destroyers were run aground and seven lost in 1923. Just North of there is Morro Bay where some stupid lady was swimming with the seals and a great white shark got her; Darwin awardee. There are a lot of wineries around that area and a great weekend tour; heck every weekend..... The food in that area is spectacular; that is what I miss....

Lompoc is the flower capital in the US; Burpee raises their seeds there in the fields to the West of Lompoc. I think he is in for an environmental shock - Lompoc gets cold and foggy much of the year as it is exposed to those Pacific weather patterns being out on that jut of land into that cold pacific ocean.

I was stationed at Vandenberg in 89-90 and spent a lot of time in Lompoc and Santa Maria. The whole Central Coast sure has changed since I lived there. Our youngest daughter is a third year student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and we have family in Paso Robles. I agree with ttmott, it gets really foggy and cold in Lompoc, especially in the summer.

Here is a view of Vandenberg from our boat this past August
