new alternator overcharging

I have a pair of 97 merc cruiser 5.7 LX/V8, i had an issue with my alternator, it was over charging on the gauges, it also sounded like marbles spinning around inside. Got a new alternator and for about 2 minutes it was charging normal just between 12 and 14 amp then it pins to 16 . the other gauge is charging normal...any reason why this is happening??

My gauge also reads high. My plan is to replace the gauge.
