Official 400EC thread

as long as your engine has ECM output for code reader, you can do it. I have 7.4 MPI engines. Series V. I am using Fox gateways to slave the data from the engines and run into the NMEA 2000 backbone. Bingo!
I've been thinking about it, and that would look good. Think I'll do it but, I have a problem. Gateways? Slave the data? 2000 backbone? Wtf???? I'm lost. I'm a GC and can build you an apartment complex but, I never could program the VCR

We finally completed fixing the rotted floor in the Salon. We discovered that the floor board did not go under the wall. They were secured together by a strip of fiberglass tape that was resin'd to both pieces. We took an oscillating saw and just cut the tape and the floor lifted up in one piece after we removed some staples. The small boards that were around the foam were totally rotted. We cleaned it all out and used a mold remover to get rid of the mold and smell. My free help cut the replacement board good side down but it worked out well.

Do you have more pics where all of the wet foam and rotted wood was cleaned out and replaced with new?

Marine power 8.1? Fuel Injected?

Not an expert, but I've been thinking about this for a while and have done some resource, so I'll take a stab

In order to go digital you need to be able to get data from the engines in digital form. The gateway attaches to the engine's diagnostic connector and harvested that engine data.

The next challenge is getting the digital information to the multifunction display. On newer boats these plug directly into an existing communication network. On older boats such as mine, I need to add a communication network. NMEA 2000 is the communication standard for the network. If the MFD and the gateway have the same communication standard, they will be to talk to each other.

Does that help?

excellent discription.......install NMEA2000 backbone, gateways on engines and a Garmin or Raymarine display on the helm.....pretty much.

Ok, I'm flying down tonight and going to go through everything to see what I have
Those later engines will have a ECM and a data output plug on them so that you can hook up a code reader.....that is all ya need.....engine relative. Add a gateway to each engine and bingo. NMEA2000 is a snap. hook up your garmin or ray marine display and you are there.

These are all of the pictures I have of the rotted section. Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of the cleaned out area before we covered it. We picked out the large pieces by hand and then used a ShopVac for the little stuff. We used Marine 31 Mold Remover Gel for the final cleanup prior to replacing the wood.

Thanks for the tip on the removal. Just brought it home last week for the winter. The generator will crank and run for about 5 seconds before it stalls. I was going to pull it and bring it to the local generator shop for diagnostics and repair. The cost to have them come out and do the diagnostic is outrageous ($750) The generator has less than 150 hours on it.

Older post - but just checking to see if you ever got your Generator issues resolved?

Thanks for asking but we have not. We have the fuel line, water hose, wires and exhaust disconnected. The lag bolts are out but we still can't get it to slide or spin. Looks like we have going to have to free up the bundles of cables in front of it and remove the battery. We are going to take another look over the weekend to see if we missed a bolt or if there is a latch of some sort.

Alrighty then...just got this in the mail, and I'm way more enthused about it. This lock is *substantially* more solid than I expected from the pictures. Don't know that I'll get to it this weekend, but it's on the top of the priority list for my next project. Thanks to you and Talon for your input.View attachment 98603
Special thanks and a shout-out to TALON and Eluther3 for the recommendation and guidance on door latches. We survived the big freeze here in Missouri, and temps finally warmed up to allow work on this installation.
You guys were right...it involved some modification and fabrication, but it's on, looks good, and works fantastic. Most importantly, the Boss is happy!

Curious what hardware you used. MFDs I've looked at so far are all over $1k. A challenge to bring in the whole system for 1800
2-Fox Gateways, 2-Garmin 7 inch displays......but I did blow the budget....am going with 8 inch screens now, so, just over 2K at this point.

Previous owner had some anchor issues, so the anchor is off the rode, and the end of the rope was pretty frayed. I figured I'd take the rope out of the windlass, and take the whole mess home to work on. Naturally, having my wife toggle the "up", the rope should have smoothly wound through the windlass into the storage bin.
As the end of the rope fed into the windlass, something obviously got off-path, and bogged it down. At the time, it was raining, I was wet, tired, and pissed off, so I left it for better days.
Yesterday tried the same strategy, with getting access to the bin over the master bed. Again, tried to pull it through while she toggled it up. No luck.
Any suggestions short of dismantling the windlass? It looks like 6 or 8 Allen bolts hold the top of the case, but I'm *not* excited about getting it apart and not being able to reassemble it.
Thanks! - Todd

Fun hurts, not sure if this helps but,
I happened to have found a couple of pictures of one opened up.
