Boat Info
2001 Sea Ray 340
Engines
6.2 L Mercruisers
I have been mostly lurking on the forum here with a few posts trying to educate myself before buying my first cruiser. After a year or so of searching I was able to find a boat here in Seattle close to home! The contract is signed now just going through the process with the Survey coming up.
For those that have lived with this particular year and model(or similar), I wanted to find out what the biggest items to be aware of are on this boat in an inspection. I know there are places I have read about such as rot around the windshield and hatches. Any other known areas or defects to be aware of?
The boat has 6.2L Mercs(480 hrs/320 hp) and has stern drive. It is also fresh water cooled. All comments appreciated!

Aside from the rot issues very common in this model/age you may want to spend a little extra having the outdrives looked at. 340's are pretty well the biggest Sea Ray you'll find with outdrives, not very common at all. If they've seen salt, or have been poorly maintained, they could be very expensive replacement items...

I have had 7 serious 340 on my radar the past 2 years. 5 had soft spots on the foredeck (one had been repaired already). You'll likely see some moisture around the windless, very common and probably not a deal killer depending on extent. On the foredeck, generally from the windshield down and around the hatches, and the grab rail on the deck.

Thanks! Are the outdrives normally something they would just casually examine? Do you mean pay a little extra to have them open some access panels ,look at the oil, etc and really check them out?

If the hull surveyed well and you had the engines checked I might consider paying to have the drives removed for inspection. And if they look "pretty darn good" go ahead and have them serviced while off, at your expense, and close the deal with the seller. I don't know if you can get a really good idea of condition without full removal though? I am not an expert by any means.

I will definitely ask about that thanks for the important tip!
