Well that ship sailed quite a while ago. 24 million Americans are directly employed by some level of government, while over 52% of the U.S. population receives some type of government benefit. The 1%ers control all governments through PACs, lobbyists, campaign financing, media and other influence. The governments control you through the millions of federal, state and local laws and regulations. The corporate media has influenced your thinking for decades.

You are right. And the left pushes for larger gov't, more oversight and more regulations. Then they must raise taxes for this. Guess who suffers now? Me and all the other hard workers that have pushed and persevered and EARNED it, only to hand it over to the freeloaders that the democrats have handed everything to. Take a drive through the projects. You will see new flashy cars worth more than what most working people own. They live in subsidized housing either free or very cheap (like $50/month). They always have the newest cell phone as soon as they come out and they get new $200 sneakers every few weeks. And they have not paid a penny into the system. Meanwhile my shoes are literally 3 years old. Sure I can afford new ones but they are still in good condition and I have bills to pay and a house to maintain so I have priorities. Welfare was supposed to be a temporary 'hand-up' but democrats have made promises for years and let them live off it to buy votes. I used to be a state constable and one of our duties was to secure the polls on election day. One of my buddies called me one election day and said a city bus pulled into the polling place he was at. The democratic party hired the city bus to pick up voters at the projects and drive them to the polls and bought them lunch. A girl my wife knows is on welfare and has 2 kids. Boyfriend is in jail again for about the 8th time. My step-son has arrested him about 3 or 4 time. She just applied for subsidized housing in the projects and was accepted. Her sister told my wife she has over $10,000 in the bank and flies her and her kids to Disney in Orlando twice a year. The last time they went the boyfriend was on parole and went. They got into a fight at the hotel and someone called the police on them so they packed up and came home early before the police got there as he was out of the state illegally. A few years ago she stabbed him. Step-son was on scene and they know she did it but he lied and they had no further evidence. And the democrats apparently condone this to buy votes.

We have become a country with an electorate that votes against its own self interest on a consistent basis. This is due to a complicated mix of causal elements that began in the 60s when traditional families and those values were diminished by the combination of changing social values, government policies that encouraged single parent homes, changes is public school curricula and population demographics. Ya the 60's-70's. I had friends with strange ideas on how things should be. There were some communes up here in the boonies but they didn't last. They should have learned from that but some didn't. I never could figure out why all the females (they're the nurture'ers you know) tended the gardens topless....as if it made the plants more productive. ;)

Peter Drucker made the point in Megatrends (a book he authored) that demographics are powerful shapers of societal trends. There is a huge group of people who were conceived following WWII. They shaped a lot of the things going on today. Some were good. Others, not so much. This was the group which said among other things, "Never trust anyone over 30." It was a group that was distrustful of authority and politically active. We had too much free time on our hands as a group. There were exceptions of course. But that was broadly true.
 
So riddle me this, and defend our media. "A white cop killed a black man" was the headline-ish. I'm obviously paraphrasing, but race was the 1st thing mentioned. Now, "2 Asian women were beaten with a cinderblock" nothing mentioned about the race of the abuser. Why? Why did the media mention the race of the victims, but not the attacker in this instance? These headlines incite riots and destruction in some cities!

It really looks like we are back in the 40's and 50's again with all the hatred we are seeing and the total lack of respect people are showing each other in public. Our political system is more like a banana republic than anything else.
I wonder what history will dub this era?
