I know there is a ceremony you are supposed to do to ward off back luck, but real stories... How many people had bad luck with their boats after changing it's name?

I have changed the name on every used boat I ever bought. No bad luck. Pirate Lady was formerly Peaceful Times. Would YOU keep a name like that?

haha NO! The boat we are trying to buy has a great pun for a name. Which as a writer/editor, I love. But at some point we may want to name it something that we pick. Some of the other boats we have seen have had pretty off the wall names.

When I got my first boat we were sitting around the table one Sunday morning and my dad was perusing the horse racing form (his hobby) and we got the name from a horse. They have great names for horses, look there.

Upon purchase, my last few boats were named Dirty Deeds, Livin’ Large and Go Big Or Go Home in that order.

I’ve changed them all with no ceremony.

Livin’ Large, later known as Soulshine busted my balls for years but I never attributed that to the name change.

That boat was just a nasty bitch and some of them just are.

Rename it what you enjoy. Research the ceremony, get some friends to join you, and have fun doing it. We rather enjoy the renaming ceremony now. Get plenty of Champaign!!! A good ceremony will have you drinking and sharing it with the gods of the four winds and Poseidon...

When we took possession of our boat and did the name change, we followed the ceremony and like MonacoMike suggested, we had fun doing it. It was just the wife and I but 4 bottle of Champaign!!!!

I bought our boat with the name Sandy on it. Since my wife is Beth, that name had to go :). We did honor Poseidon and followed the ceremony with good luck so far. Why chance it.

Why chance it is kinda how I feel. We are ok with the name as it is. But when we come up with something better we’ll change it. And do the ceremony.

What if your boat is on a trailer? Can all this still be done with a bucket of water not from tap? Another thing to make the elderly folks across the street to think I'm bat crap crazy.

They are indeed.

All of my boats have been named after songs.

Ditto - both of my boats were named after songs. If you're too young to know the song, you're probably too young to hang out with us (unless you bring the beer)

No bad luck and no need for a vodoo dance. Only military vessels are not renamed while in service as a respect for those who lost their life in her. Once sold to a different country they are renamed. Ships are often renamed under new ownership, even the famous La France or was it Ille de France became Norway? and then the Blue Ship. New owner=new name. As to bad luck, remember the Titanic was never renamed.
