Jammed Impeller

ASk for a price first it may be more than buying a new one. I got my generator pump rebuilt once as I could not find any for sale. Price was 400. I later found a new one for 200.

I would expect a shop to pull it for no charge at all. They have the tool, it will either work or not. And, you should know inside of two minutes.

The only other option I can think of if it's stuck that badly is to press off the pulley, remove the seal and snap ring from the shaft bore and press the whole shaft out of the impeller. Once you've gotten that far you'd might as well replace all the bearings and seals and you will have a whole new unit. Of course this method requires a shop press so it's not for everyone.

Yup a little out of my wheelhouse. I have dropped it at the shop and will post an update as soon as I know (all the mechs were at lunch when I went by). Fingers crossed.

Every year I say I'm gonna save $$ on maintenance and do it all myself ..and usually I'm fine. I changed plugs, tranny fluids, oil, genny impeller, genny oil, holding tank filter ..all good. And for whatever reason I always think that changing the raw water impellers will be no big deal despite having done it several times on this boat. And every year I curse that decision and swear I'll pay someone next year. Until a shop quotes me $500 per side. So I deal with it and do it and still curse that decision. There's been a little more cursing this year though.

Aaaand it's out! Puller did not work for them so something about a chisel and a blow torch mixed with some F bombs and he got it out. Said he's never seen one in there like that. Charged me $100 but whatever. It's out. Good grief man!

Did you call Hardin? If so, what did they say? I have one in my boat, I don't like the looks of this.

Buy a main engine raw water pump. Exchange it with the one you want to put a new impeller in. Replace impeller in the on you pulled and put it in the other engine then replace the impeller in that one. Now you have a spare. Impeller is easier to replace on a bench than in the engine room.

Thanks. Good idea. I do have a spare pump and impeller on board that I replaced with this Hardin, and I did manage to change the other (starboard) impeller no problem during this 3 day saga. :)

I did. They have no idea. Said it should have come off.

Was your starboard pump a Hardin Gen 7 as well? Just ordered the refurb kit and hoping I don’t have to buy a puller.

Nope ..stock Merc pump. They could not get the impeller out even with the puller. Hope you have better luck than I did.

It looks like the shoulder of the impeller bore took a bit of a beating. Fortunately it doesn’t seem like it will comprise the seal but I’d clean it up just the same to avoid damaging the new impeller on it’s way in.

It doesn’t seem like there’s a metal core or sleeve as part of that impeller. Is there?

Yikes... I hope so too. Glad I saved my stock pump as well.

Good eye. Was a little worried about that myself and now I’m a little more. How would one go about cleaning it up? Sand paper by hand? What grit? I do not have much experience with metal work aside from sanding. I have 2 new steel plates that the impeller will sit against here but I do see what you mean.

150 grit.... and use a big block with the sand paper so you stay flat against the surface...or lay the sand paper on a flat surface and hold the part... the groove is for the gasket so carefully clean that out

Sanding or a long and flat mill file with the file being my fist choice.

Either way I’d pack the bore with a rag to keep grit away from the bearing. Pull that rag out when you’re done and the particles will come out with it.

That surface won't effect it the O-ring sit proud of it. Clean the O-ring groove and use grease on it when you reassemble

Agreed, but it’s a little snotty looking and there could be burrs headed inwards.

You wouldn’t touch that up a bit?
