Engines
...
My transom assemblies on my 06 290DA are being replaced and the shop is giving me a few days with the engines out to do what I need/want to do in the bilge. Can anyone give me some things to do, items to inspect, etc while the engines are out? One thing I want to tackle is the flaking bilge. Any tips on this would be appreciated as well. For the cost to pull the engines I want to maximize this opportunity! Thank you

major cleaning if desired, I did that on my 290 with the engine out. Bilge pumps/hoses if they're tough to get to in the aft center bilge.

I'd normally say transom assemblies, but that's being taken care of. If you need to service trim tab pumps, rebed trim tabs, tighten head hose clamps or even remove for cleaning/service, etc. Basically, anything on the back wall or rear corners of the bilge that is normally tough to get to.

All above plus thoroughly clean and paint bilge. If I had this opportunity, I would have the cleanest bilge ever seen!

Bennett - what would you paint it with? I have read so many different things. I want simple and easy.

I had the flaking bilge issue in my 280. I know some have gone the gelcoat route, but I cleaned, sanded and prepped then used Gray Interlux Bilgekote. It held up perfectly for the 3 years I owned the boat and wiped clean with a rag. I would use it again in a heartbeat if needed.

Thanks. I was looking at that as an option. What did you clean and prep with?

I cleaned the bilge thoroughly with simple green and scotchbrite pads. Then sanded with 80 grit paper and wiped down with acetone and a tack cloth to get the sanding residue up.

If possible, steam clean it! Not hot water but steam.

I just tried my el-cheapo harbor freight steam cleaner in the bilge. It works beautifully and for the most part without any degreaser.

You can rent them but I don’t know about your area. I bought one a few years back for a contract we had before COVID
Steam Ginny are the best ones

I am hesitant to ask because I am not sure I want to know, but what did they charge to pull and reset the engines?

You don't want to know... But since you asked. 1000 per to pull and replace. 600 per for transom assembly install and 3000 each transom assembly and a few more 100 for little stuff. All in (so far) is 10,000. I negotiated the few days in the bilge. It's not an easy to swallow repair, that's for sure.

+1 on gray interlux bilgekote I love the stuff!
Gray or white? My bilge looks more like an off white than gray. I will check the parts manual for the paint. I think white would match better.

There are two "areas". The existing gel coat (in good condition) and then the problem areas which are a reddish fiberglass resin looking material. Same prep for both??
