The old days

In NY they treat bottom paint as a pesticide. You must have be licensed to apply it in a commercial setting, ie not your own boat or in a marina. DEC does spot checks and levies heavy fines on marinas not in compliance.

Or you freakin kidding me!! Here slap it on and go. That’s crazy. There are a couple green marinas that require a tarp under boat if you scrape but not many. What does NY do about ablative paint? I use here so I don’t have to scratch and sand.

It really was a thing. 2 kids could make crazy money bottom painting(labor only) . Do 4 5 boats a day.
My son and nephew have been doing that for the last 4 years. The owner supplies the paint, they provide everything else. Nice cash work for a couple of kids!

Ablative is fine here. It’s what most folks use. You’re supposed to put catch and dispose of any scrapings.

Frankly seems weird there’s less concerns about scraping.

This is why people are leaving NY in droves. Too bad they are all moving to NC. Our area has exploded with NYers, and I am an ex NYers, but I left 40 years ago.

In Texas they won't even allow you to work on your boat when on the hard. They got you by the balls.

Even up here in Taxachusetts, at my marina we can do anything to the boat except bottom paint. Also not allowed to bring in outside contractors.

To be fair, bottom paint is a toxic pesticide. And usually in use right next to waterways. So, not unreasonable?

Plus on Long Island where I live 100% of our water is from groundwater. Pollute that and we’re screwed.
See: Grumman Bethpage plume. Lots of toxic shit in the groundwater that’s hitting the pump stations, and spreading.

That the situation here. We can bring in outside contractors as long as it’s not something the yard can do (which is
not that much). I can do anything I want myself except apply bottom paint. Not bad.

Scraping results in larger chips whereas sanding produces dust that is airborne and easily ingested. Sanding even with a vacuum collection system still produces airborne dust. Blasting is usually tented and worker wears a protective suit with clean air supply.

Am I reading this right cause I can not wrap my head around what I am reading? You can’t paint your own boat? I can’t even imagine this concept. Wife and just spent a nice day painting bottom and outdrive. Compared who had less splatter on clothes. Good times!

Yes sir, you are reading this right. No dice on doing your own bottom paint. Where I'm at for the winter, I'm the first row so it's maybe 10 feet from the ocean. It's gravel and I think they have some kind of system for collecting oil/gas/etc that runs off especially when they winterize but I'm not 100% sure about that. Next year I'm hoping to store it at home where there's no restrictions!

In NY you can paint your boat if it’s on your property. If in a commercial marina you can’t - restricted to a licensed applicator. Similarly you need to be licensed if you want to hire out to paint bottoms on a mobile basis. Sum up: private painting your boat- ok. Commercial setting - need application license. I think you’re supposed to put down a tarp to catch the drips.

The idea is not to have bio-toxic paint spread around near the water. Maybe your experience with splattering it around is an example why?

Hey we ain’t slinging a gallon of toxic paint in your water system. So chill. A few drops on the gravel won’t hurt you. And I sure that ‘licensed’ painter you paying ain’t doing any better than me.

Or maybe it’s clueless wonder politicians who hate people. I’m waiting for the rule that prohibits me from wiping my own arse.
