New To Boston Harbor Boating

My yacht club accepts new members year round. You do not need wait a year to join but slip availability is based on seniority and boat size. If you joined my YC now (4k initiation) you would most likely have a slip to use next season give your boat size. Seems like many are moving up to big boats (35-50ft). The most difficult boat size to accommodate is 35-39ft due to slip configurations.

Good point, I meant to say a waiting list for the slip. They said they would gladly take my initiation/dues/etc now with a slip in 1 or 2 years  Then I still have to get a slip this year and possibly next. I bought my boat from a seller who was a YC member in N Weymouth and I really liked the club and location. Also I did find a few clubs that are just moorings -- but see above

I reached out to the yacht club and the slip waiting list is 4 years.

So roughly one boat buck joining fee, and another buck for yearly dues. Then 50 cents a year slip fee if/when I get one.

I have to do something else for a slip in the meantime, or else I can buy/install a mooring at the YC (3 bucks) but that's not ideal for many reasons.

Meanwhile my current lease started May 1 and I'm still on land

Phil, you say you have a ‘lease’, but still on land. What are you leasing?

Technically it's a 12x35 space (slip), water included and metered electric. The paperwork said it runs May 1 to Oct 31 which is the standard boating season up here. This particular marina requires 3 weeks notice for launch. I request first week of May, three months ago (early Feb). They will probably get back to me tomorrow with some bs about how things are busy, should be soon, yada yada yada.

Trying to be patient but this is MM and they have been an utter disappointment with every other aspect so it seems the only way to get anywhere with them is constant calls and emails.

On the weekends I take my kids down to where the boat is, on blocks, and we look down at the docks and see the other families taking the boats out ... going fishing or maybe just cruising. I show them where our spot is, and they ask when we're gonna be boating for real, and I got nuthin'

There are no other marinas you can go to? Or you stuck on this one for the amenities? I don’t mean sound condescending cause I got 20 - 30 marinas in a 4 miles area all with available slips for <3 - 4K a year. And that’s for the high end ones. We pay $1600 year. So I learning here. Consider a zodiac to use while working thru slip issues? The kids will love it, the go-cart of boats.

Appreciate the advice! Maybe it's regional, or maybe it's supply-and-demand right now due to boating being so hot ....

But a lot of them force you to pay up front for the whole season, which turns out to be $900/mo in my case. Which I don't have an issue with, but it locks you in for the season because you pay in the spring. I did all this paperwork with dates that are set in stone, then those dates come and go. Their response is we're really busy, and they push everything out a week. Maybe it's because they cater to the big boats, or maybe they just don't give a bleep I'm not really sure. There are plenty of other marinas around but they are all similar in price.

Knowing that slip leases start May 1, and seeing that the slips are half full at best right now, I assume that they are just behind -- even though they collect full payment from everyone ahead of time.

There is a marina around the corner, in the same bay, for 2/3 the price. It's not as nice but they have the same amenities. It will be on my short list for next year.

Of course you throw in the Covidiocy, so I picked a place in-state for this year because with all the unknowns, the last thing I need is to have a slip in another state and all of a sudden you can't cross state lines

Even before COVID slip availability in the Boston area was tight. Lately it’s gotten worse with the influx of new boaters.

Good point Henry. This brings up a bigger conversation around while we are still here in the Boston area. I spoke to my parents and the outlaws, and all of us agreed we have stayed here because of the others.

Thanks for the insight. My marina is half in January half in July. Good for full calendar year. But that rare, most are full pay like yours. I am not comfortable leaving boat in water for winter so I pay extra for land storage come winter. I hope it works out.

We have 3 slips empty on my pier. Others empty on other piers. See this pic? My zodiac on rack. Marina charged me $150 for it last year, but with all the empty slips if he sends me a bill this year (aint yet) I gonna tell him pound salt. Nobody else in line to use it. Will see how that goes. Believe it or not boaters here have more leverage than the marinas.

For us, current slip holders need to have a deposit in by Nov 10 (there is a discount for full payment or 50%). By Nov 15 open slips are known and anyone wanting to change can do then. By mid Jan remainder of 50% less Nov deposit is due. By May 1, remains balance is due. I usually do a third at each milestone. For the Sabre, 2 30amps & water, 72” dock box, dinghy dock tie up and mid May to mid Oct slip is just shy of $7k.

In my case I paid 100% up front last February ($150/foot), documented launch date of May 3rd. Yet here we are more than half way through May and the marina is saying things like "soon" and "let's talk about a launch plan soon"

I guess I'm naive for thinking that a contract means anything.

Last November when hauled, marina asked when I want to launch, Me being just bought this boat last summer after a 7 year gap, was hot to trot. I said April 1. Which was cold rain miserable. Needed mech work, was too cold for poor guy to do his stuff. Got launch April 17. Next year gonna go for May 1.

It was too cold to properly wash wax hull. So now it’s in water and not very clean and pretty. Lots of black streaks I can’t get to till July when water warm and I can get in to clean. Don’t care, I floatin and boatin. Ain’t out to impress anyone.

As much as I love to hammer MM lately, I am happy to report that they stepped up and launched the boat and went the extra mile to me as a customer.
