Good morning! I need advice on how to remove the salon floor of my MY390 with Cummins 6CTA 480CE engines. I have a mechanic that is going to pull both heads as I have a dropped Valve Seat on the SB engine. The mechanic WILL NOT do the work without the floor coming out!
I have removed the SB couch and pulled the carpet. My questions is how to remove the wood floor without destroying the wood or engine heat insulation attached to the wood flooring.

I appreciate your time!

My guess would be that it is screwed down somehow, but it doesn’t look like it. If it’s glued you may have a problem.

Did you crawl down underneath? That will tell the truth.

As someone who has been looking at the 390 MYs -- is that middle hatch the only way go get to the engines? I have an irrational fear of needing a repower and then how would you get an engine out of the salon?

Maybe you could pack the bow full of ladies and then he'd take the job as-is :D

Are you sure you can’t pop the heads without removing the floor?…. You only need an inch if that to get over dowels….

you have some disassembly….but I would spend the time doing that instead of cutting the floor

did you ask sea Ray?

Some of these jobs on big boats are done by cutting a hole in the side of the boat and reglassing the hole after the work is completed. Is that an option?

Dropping a valve will likely take the piston and liner with it. Going to have to pull the pan for that, so it's possible the engine may have to be lifted a bit.

Floor is plywood panels that can be removed. Look at old threads under "official 390" and you will see an entry about doing this (with photos). Sea Ray has a procedure for this, not sure they still help like they used to though.

My boat has had both heads replaced with new style before I bought it.

Good luck,
Mike

As stated earlier, there is a built-in scheme for getting access to the engines if needed. I haven't had to do it for my 40MY, but I did for a very similar aft-cabin boat with about the same amount of room. It had the same type of removable panels in the ER overhead. The problem was a transmission that had to be changed out. The shop rigged up an a-frame to pull up the engine. It just needed to be lifted but they could have just as easily pulled it into the salon at least. I imagine experienced shops must do this quite often since these guys quickly figured out what to do. In the case of the 390/40MY, I am guessing the cockpit might have to be pulled to get an engine completely out; I think I have seen posts describing just that but perhaps not on CSR. I would be a little leery of an engine mechanic who didn't know how to access the engine for his work if that is the case here.

I believe on the 480DB the floor is secured from underneath. You remove the fasteners and then lift the floor panels. Are your 390MY panels similar?

I believe it is correct that the panels are secured from below. Also the joints are caulked so think you will need to to cut the caulk with a knife to remove the panels once they are unscrewed (or unbolted) .
