We are planning a trip to LI this summer and would like to stay at Sag Harbor a few nights. What marinas do you recommend? We are 57’ over all with 15’ beam and 4’ draft.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a Dingy I recommend staying out on a Mourning ball... even if you don't there's a taxi that runs back and forth... And its Cheap.. When we go out there we usually stay at Greenport.. Town Harbor then run over to Sag or Shelter Island...

Actually I forgot which harbor has the morning balls... Sag or Shelter... Its been 2 years since I been up that way lol... But highly Recommend Greenport FYI...

I would also recommend the mooring ball at Sag. Well protected, taxi, and pump out.

OK good to know thank you. We do have a dinghy so that works. My wife does like to be on the dock more than on anchor or a mooring. Is there enough to do in Sag Harbor for a few days? We like to have things to see and do, we are not good at sitting on the boat all day when in a new port. We have stayed in Greenport and like it there, we were just looking for something different.

We went to Sag last year for the first time. Stayed on a mooring. There are a few marinas but didn’t really inquire. Looks pricey though. There is a town marina that is not too bad and looks like they recently updated the docks. Has great restaurants and shopping (female perspective on the shopping). For us it’s a good 2 day stop. Mostly people and boat watching. We ran into quite a few celebs within a 48 hour window. You can always shoot over to West Neck Harbor. Not much to do there either but nice little marina with a restaurant across the way. Anchorage is very relaxing as well. With your dinghy setup I think you could stay in Sag and run over to west neck or even Greenport to mix it up.

A couple things....I also recommend either a mooring ball or anchor and dinghy in. Dockage in Sag Harbor is stupid expensive. Sag Harbor cove is very well protected and gets you out of the busy yacht traffic. However you need 21 feet air clearance under the bridge to get in there. Plenty of water and good holding on anchor. It's a good stop if you've never been before. Tons of boat candy.....But if you're like me I found it nothing more than a good walking town with a bunch of pretty good restaurants and ice cream shops. Lots of New Yorkers and lots of New York attitude. (Am I allowed to say that?) I suppose you could walk the town in an afternoon. Or Uber around the Hamptons and find more to do and experience. I'm not in a rush to go back especially when there are so many awesome anchorages and stops out there and beyond.

I should also mention that if you travel with bikes Sag/Eastern LI is a great place to ride. You can certainly spend a few days going around the Hamptons and use Sag Harbor as your base. We travel with a cool set of foldable electric bikes...

We stayed two nights last summer at Waterfront Marina. The Dockmaster and staff were good and the location is awesome. Yes like all marina's in nice places these days is stupid expensive. They are fixed docks. It gets super tight we were way up in a corner by the restaurant, nothing like swinging 60' of boat in a 65' space with 3+ million dollar boats on every corner! The bonus was the sport fisherman next to us had a banner tuna trip, they gave away probably 300lbs of tuna meat. We were dumb when they offered some to us, I didn't realize how much they had so told him the 5lbs or so he already had in a ziplock was more than we needed. Over the next few hours he was giving it out like candy but we felt bad asking for more!

I don't think you can get back into the cove, and the mooring field behind the sea wall is limited to 50' and under. The moorings out front get a lot of wake from the boat traffic.

In a future mid week visit we may try anchoring on the east side of the outer harbor even though it will be a long dinghy ride in.

Town was good. My wife and I went to college in Southampton so this was one of our weekend spots we used to visit for the day on a regular basis. There is a fantastic grocery store just up from the docks.

If your looking for Sag Harbor then the Water Front Marina is the place to stay easy walk into town as it's right there. A very nice restaurant is the American Hotel. I use to live on Long Island and we would go out there and Block Island as a week trip yearly. I do recommend staying on a mooring at least one night, it is very nice looking on to the town at night. Sag Harbor, as mentioned, is very expensive to stay at.

You should also take a trip around Shelter Island at some point on your stay, really nice trip around the island. You can also stay at Island Boat Yard and Marina as well, but that won't allow you to get to Sag Harbor without taking the ferry.

On the other side of Shelter Island (North Fork of LI) is Sterling Harbor Marina. Nice place to stay and the Town of Greenport has some nice places for dinner as well.

Thanks for the info. We have bikes with us so we will plan a ride while we are there.

Good info, thanks Scott. We will check out Waterfront Marina. It looks good from the pics. The only downfall to them is their cancelation policy is almost 1 month so the slip fee will be lost if the weather doesn't cooperate.

While we are on this topic... I'm prob gonna head to Greenport this year as well... Does it make sense to just run out to Block for the day maybe even 1 night from there.. The ride don't look to long... Anything to look out for running out that way?

Our home port is Greenport. It would be nice to connect when you are out and happy to help with any local knowledge.
Block is by far our favorite destination! It might not make sense to go to Block for just one night vs staying in Greenport or another spot on LI for that one night if you are headed back West. Block I is one of those places that one day is just not enough time unless you are just passing through. Another factor to consider is the weather. The admiral and I joke that the weather in BI sound is like the Bermuda Triangle.

Yes Def. I'm making the trip in a 340 sundancer so yes weather is def a factor for me... I do have all updated electrons though. We usually go to Greenport every year around the 4th of July. We come up though Shinnecock Lock, usually grab lunch some where over there, then continue. We usually stay at the Green-porter. Love that town. We usually stay in Greenport for about 3/5 days, depending... Gotta hit Claudio's on Sunday. We might cruise over to Sag or Shelter during the week to grab lunch. Love Salt at shelter Island. How many days would you plan for Block Island? What would be the must to Do?

There is no "must do" in block which is what makes it a great place (aside from where to get the best mudslides). The vibe on the island is all to itself. Note, like everywhere but maybe more so on Block, the week of the 4th everything is booked. Most restaurants don't do reservations so the wait can be a bit. So you either have to eat early or eat late. If you prefer to grab a slip you will need to book early as they fill up. If you search on here there is a thread about the marinas at Block. Everyone has their favorite. Moorings are first come first serve but all bets are off during the 4th.

My home port is Greenport. Block for us is a 3 night minimum. It can be done in less, but you will feel rushed and will wish you had more time.

Block is our favorite destination. Highly recommend more than a day. Travel to and from should be easy for you but just look out for fog and then it's normally very breezy in the afternoon.

Agreed, two years ago I ran all the way from Falmouth Harbor to Montauk in the fog. Couldn’t see more than a quarter mile for 4 hours.

We really should try for a North East meetup this summer.

Jeremy, when are you thinking of being in Sag/shelter island area?

We haven't made any concrete plans yet, other than to do 2-3 weeks out with some work mixed in.

We may head back to the Chesapeake, but only if we can commit to three weeks.
