The news from NY this morning is an example of the challenges our police officers have across the country.

These are the people who have chosen through their profession to be the ones who step "in front of us" to protect all of us from the dangerous elements in our society.

When you encounter an Officer, take a moment and tell them "Thank You" for the job they do.

Personally I am a firm believer that no officer will pay for their own coffee or snacks when I am in convenience store or fast food. Its a small thing which communicates appreciation for what they do every day.

I have to agree 100%. I know some of you are LEOs or exLEOs. And there aren't many jobs in the world where there is a real possibility of a life or death split second decision that needs to be made, when you know it will be second guessed and micro-analyzed with hindsight. And many of the people you deal with are criminals and treat you like enemy. And yet you do it (or did it). And I know that when there are bad apples that come up, the media and certain groups run it up the flagpole, and ignore the other 99.9999999999% that are doing their jobs proudly, honorably and ethically to keep us safe . THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

I got a wicked speeding ticket on a 4 lane highway in a construction zone … (on the hands free not paying attention) the cop was really nice about it and marked it no workers near… which I guess helps in cost. After he gave me the ticket …. I said “I don’t necessarily like you right at this moment but I appreciate the job you do”… he laughed turned back and said he really appreciated that. He hung out for a second and said they have to crackdown lately because a worker got hit a week prior. You could tell he really appreciated the acknowledgement.

Media pushes the view that Law officers no longer have the publics respect. The Medias recklessness for ratings encourages the unlawful to feel vindicated in their actions. I for one don't believe anything they report these days no matter which news group. But lets face it the News Media only reports on the big stage of the major cities. The rest of us in Normal Town USA still have respect for the Men and Women in Blue.

AMEN! Talk about a thankless job and putting their lives on the line every day.

Thanks for this post and the comments. When I was an LEO I did it for fun, certainly not for the money. No way would I want to still be doing it today. My step-son is a detective an we are glad he is off patrol now. He still patrols on OT or an occasional fill-in but for the most part he spends his time investigating crimes.

Love the post! It's seldom heard in Massachusetts but I do know the vast majority of the public supports us.

Friend of ours was the former Police Chief of a neighboring town. He retired and took a job running security for a large Fortune 500 company (hey, he has two kids to put thru college). He missed it, so he ended up taking a part time Cop gig in another town on every other weekend. Funny how he talks about these younger officers "training" him on a traffic stop. Rumor (which he denies) is that he'll be tapped to be the new Cheif when the current one retires in a few years. Personally I think it's true -- he was born to be a cop. Even though these are nice suburban towns, it's still a bit scarey as some wierd stuff happens. It's just worisome.

As Retired NYPD, myself and all of us appreciate your thoughts and sentiments...it's been a tough stretch, particularly this month in NYC.

My brother-in-law has been a police officer since about 1981 and is supposed to retire this month I think. He hates it. Has hated it for a long time. He worked for Palm Beach County sheriffs dept for about 8 years back in the late 80's-early 90's. Moved back here and became chief at a small dept then got hired at a larger dept where my step-son works and has been there now about 25 years. But he also works part time in a small township dept where he lives and I'm betting after he retires he will stay on there

I could not agree more. I also pay for Military coffee/snacks as well. We also donate yearly to all of our local PD/FD/SD as well. These guys have it extra tough these days, every car they walk up too could be their last. Something to think about.

My first day of training the instructor asked us a question...how many calls do you think will involve a gun. Most answered less than 1%. He said 'nope, all of them...unless you forgot to bring yours'.
