Anyone live near Cape Coral? My wife reserved an Airbnb there this summer. Trying to decide if I should drag my sea hunt there or just rent a boat while we’re there.

Anything that I must see while there?

lots of boating in that area. If you are way up a canal, it might be better time wise to go rent one

Just spent last night looking for a place there either in April or May. HUGE difference in prices for that 30 day swing.

I look forward to hearing the suggestions you get for things to do.

We were looking at the River District in Ft Myers. Anyone care to give an opinion on that area? Seems like a fun spot to stay or even just visit?

There are many places to go! Lots of little bars a restaurants. You head south you’re in Ft. Myers Beach (Maybe a 30 min boat ride) there is St. James City (Bars with dockage include Low Key Tiki, Phuzzy’s boat shack and Ragged Ass Salon). Is you place on a canal? You say your rental is this summer… its hot. Picnic Island is a local favorite to swim. I have seen people nose into big shell island in the Caloosahatchee River and watch the boat go by in the miserable mile.

Watch the tides!

We rented for many years in Cape Coral on a canal and rented a boat …a small hurricane. The kids wanted to go to Ft Myers everyday. We would anchor off the beach just up from the pier and rent those lounge chairs…when not there would anchor off Sanibel and swim. We went to Rumrunners, Mucky duck on Captiva and Tarpon point a lot.
The further you are up the canals the worse it gets…especially in the brutal heat of the summer

We are on a canal that’s really close to the mouth of the river.

I picked up my 390 from here:

Great places.

Will speak to boat accessible spots we have been.

Westin has a nice marina, standard level of amenities that you would expect at a Westin.

Downtown. We usually stay at City Marina, great access to a vibrant downtown area. There are a couple of alternatives close by that we have not tried.

Out the river, south fork. Fort Meyers beach (Pink Shell has marina). Nice beach, trolleys run along the island.

Head an hour or two north on the ICW, Captiva with lots of options. Push another couple of miles and your at Cabbage Key.

Lots of great options.

Temporary highjack......If you were spending 2 nights in either Cape Coral or the River district in Ft Myers, where would you stay?

Are you on the boat? or by car?

My answers are if on the boat - assuming you require a marina to tie up in.

Cape Coral - Westin - hands down. Unless being on a sandy beach was important, then I would cross the river to probably Pink Shell (though there can be a lot of small humans there).

River District - Pick one of the marinas (for example City Marina) then select from several hotels nearby.

What do you want to do while there? That would probably answer your question because the 3 offer very different experiences.

Westin - nice, luxurious hotel with pool and out door fire pit. Couple of fun restaurants you can get to up the canals near by. No beach experience without traveling. Pretty much on property experience, not much around the hotel.

River District. Lots of restaurants within walking distance with some shopping. No beach without traveling.

Pink Shell - Beach - very nice beach. Ok hotel with pools. Tends to get very busy with family traffic. Some restaurants by riding trolley or by boat.

Or do more than one.

Westin to downtown - 30-40 minutes. Westin to Pink Shell - 20-30 minutes. Pink Shell to downtown 40 minutes.

GREAT Info! Thank you. Sorry, should've mentioned earlier that this would be a driving trip.

We get plenty beach and pool time between Dallas and Port Richey so that's not high on the agenda. We're much more interested in walking around and seeing the sites, visiting galleries, have a few cocktails, visit unique shops and restaurants, etc. Basically want to see anything that makes a place unique. We're also keeping a casual eye out for a possible move in a year or two.

The Westin looks cool just to watch the boats come and go?
