Prop singing? What do you think?

Sounds like prop singing to me. I had the same problem on a previous boat. I had the prop taken off one winter and the prop shop beveled an edge on the prop. The singing went away.

Sounds like prop sing to me. I had the same sound on my boat and it was prop sing. Took the prop place a few tries to get it to stop. Last year I painted the props with cold galvanizing paint from HD and my port prop started singing a little bit again. This year I sanded the edges down to bar metal after painting them and no singing. Did you paint the props this off season? Maybe try diving on it with some sand paper and taking the paint off the edges.

FWIW, sounds like prop sing to me. I've heard it before on boats our size but never on mine.
Then 3 years ago I bought a cheap Solas aluminum prop new as a spare for my dinghy motor. Couldn't believe the way that thing howled. Everyone in the marina was looking at us
like WTH. The prop had a flat black paint on it, I filed the trailing edges and put some gloss paint on it similar to the white glossy paint on the original Yamaha prop and that was the end of the noise. Personally, I wouldn't touch my big props with a file, But I figured no big deal on a $60 dinghy prop.

When I had my props tuned last year, they used 1/2" of sandpaper around the edges. Not sure if that was why, but I didn't experience any prop sing.

Yes painted them off season with the same paint. I paint them every year with this. The only change is there brand new props. When I pull it I’ll do what you said. After I file to spec, I’ll also sand the edges.

If they are new then I would take them back to the place you bought them and asked them to put anti-sing edges on them. That’s what the prop shop did for me and it worked. After the first attempt it quieted them down significantly but not completely. After I took them back again they got it to stop completely. They were quiet till I painted them last year. I have painted them every year but I used Trilux 33 the first 2 years and then the cold galvanizing paint last year. Not sure why that made a difference but it seemed to.

Wow, the same thing just happened to me. First day out with a brand new Solas 4-blade. It performs great, but it sure belts out its own tune. Did you file both surfaces of the trailing edge (fwd & aft)? Tempted to do this and repaint mine now.

New to me. I had to look it up. Is there (besides the noise) anything wrong with this? Are you losing efficiency like cavitation?

The back side of the trailing edge. This is the Yamaha prop. The leading edge is the edge with the paint worn off. I filed the trailing edge to duplicate the flat angle you can see on the back side of the prop.
Blades.

He either said to bring him the prop or he would make a video and show me exactly where to do it. My prop guy sent me a video on how to do it since it would be a pain to block it and lay me up for a few days. Your supposed to file from the root/hub of the prop to the tip on the Leading edge. That's the part facing forward/Shaft side in red. Not on the push side where rudder is. Not on the cup area. I saw one guy online that ground down the cup area. That's wrong. I'm pulling it at 11:30am today I'll report back.

No. No loss of anything, Just a real annoying sound. The wife says I have OCD so this doesn't help it..LOL

I was told the same thing, you can run it like that forever but it is very annoying.

We’ll dissatisfied. Pulled the boat and filed. The starboard side is gone. The port is a little quieter at 650rpm then gets louder to around 950. It used to be 1050rpm. Called my prop guy and he said make mor of an edge and go around the prop more. I just didn’t want to take too much off. Also with the port and starboard in forward. The port makes noise. As soon as I put the starboard in reverse the noise goes away. Also tied to the dock I can’t hear it anymore either. Better, but really bummed I didn’t get it 100%. How many tries did it take you guys?

I have not filed on the big props but I went down in the basement and looked at my spare set of props and took a couple pictures. Maybe it will help you.
First pic is a blade of a left hand prop, pressure face. Clearly can see the cup on the trailing edge.

Second pic is the same blade, suction face, trailing edge. So it’s the backside of the blade where the cup is on the front side. I can clearly see the bevel they filed or ground when the props were tuned last, which was about 7 years ago.

FWIW, the bevel starts about an inch from the hub and ends about an inch short of the point where I would say the trailing edge becomes the leading edge.

Good luck

I notice the same pattern on my props once they were reworked.

The well known and respected prop place I use took 2 times to get it to go away. They told me the first time I brought them to him that it might take a few tries to get it to go away.

I guess I just didn't take enough off. Yours look like a power wheel did that. The file seemed to take a while to get any bevel and it wasn't as far as that. I'm just afraid of taking too much off. I may have not gone far enough around the tip. and did nothing near the cup on either side. Just to verify 200%...With the props installed I filed the side facing the front of the boat from HUB to almost TIP. Is the edge of the prop squared off? Or like a knife edge?
