Keep Track of Rising Prices

With gas prices seeming to be dropping, I have this theory. Now hear me out….
Gas at say 2.50. So oil companies start jacking up little by little until it’s 5.50. Making record profits.
Then slowly back it down to say $4. And everyone going, cool! Gas prices down. And everyone happy.
So now they just made $4 the new normal.
Everyone just got boned up the butt and is happy about it.
I’m telling you this is what is going on. Next spring you’ll be happy to fill the tank at $4 a gallon and saying thank god gas prices came down.
Can I get a hallelujah?
Not sure I want to give you the hallelujah but I agree in spades. We are down to $3.89 for regular, too bad the Jag takes premium still $5.49 Hmmmm. Haven’t checked marina gas, going in next weekend. Was $6.99, we’ll see. But yes it comes down half as much as it went up and everyone is happy. Hmmmm

@Pirate Lady : The flaw in your example is that you think that oil companies control the price of the comodity like that. Nothing could be further from the truth, in my opinion.

However, I agree with you 100% that the psychology has been flipped. After seeing $5+/gallon, a sub $4/gallon seems "cheap". In my view, that has been the goal of this administration. They have accelerated the conversion from fossil fuels by not giving a damn of the cost to the American people along the way.

This recent "drop" in gasoline/energy prices is due to decreased demand. We can talk about all of the conspiracy stories in the world, but Mr. Supply and Ms. Demand rule the day. The decrease in demand is due to a contracting economy, regardless of what the White House says.

We've been VERY lucky this year in that we haven't had a storm/hurricane enter the Gulf and impact drilling, but more importantly refining operations. When running at 90+% capacity, a small blip has a big effect on the supply. Then watch the prices.

For us the recent drop is due to the gas tax holiday
Think, besides NY, CT, GA and MD have done the same

No it is not. The slight decrease, and temporary decrease in gas (barrel of oil) is the reduction in demand due to the continued slow down of the economy, globally. This of course until this new "Inflation Reduction Bill" takes effect. Then the tax increase on oil imports will spike it again right around election time, and next year with increased income tax the economy will slow further due to less disposable income by the middle class.

With all due respect, while certainly crude coming off has helped, for New Yorkers, so has the Gas Tax Holiday

Come On, Man. The Inflation Reduction bill is going to lower prices on prescription drugs and EVs. That will make everything better. And there is no tax increase on anyone making less than $400K...Joe says so and so do 87,000 additional IRS agents. Plus the IRS took down their ad looking for agents willing to "use force". Plus, Joe fixed gas prices, they're only $2 higher than when he took office. How much more can he do? Plus, inflation was 0 in July, Joe said so. Putin price hike.

Which brings up an interesting question: Does the average US gasoline price include state taxes? And if a state, liky NT, CT, GA, and MD suspend said taxes, does that create an artificial drop in the the national average? Asking for a friend.

Don't flip the psychology. Gas at sub $4.00/gallon is still HIGH. Repeat that.

State taxes are reflected in the averages which is one of the reasons it can vary from state to state. And $4/gallon is $2.50 too high. So go green...wait, now we can't get solar panels from China because most of them are made using Uyghur slave labor. Now what? There goes my big money saving idea...

Doing a little traveling right now.
Diesel at the dock at the start of the trip, Buffalo, NY- $6.699/gal.
Geneva OH- $5.659.
vermillion OH- Valvtec- $4.899. Fuel bought within a weeks time.
Had a conversation with a very nice lady at the fuel dock in Vermillion. She was telling us how she keeps her ear to the ground on current prices so she can be competitive. I politely asked how much cushion she has that she can just adjust her price based on what others are selling for. Then she mentioned that there a marina not to far away that is in the $4.40 range and she can’t compete with that, they have a bunch of pumps and move a lot of fuel. Sounds like they charge whatever they can get away with. There isn’t a $2 dollar gas tax savings between OH and NY and the geographical distance can be covered in one day’s boat ride. They’re all charging whatever they can get, simple.
Fuel shot up for several reasons that have been beat to death, and it appears to me that distributors and retailers are doing they’re best to make sure it doesn’t come down any too fast.

Not sure if this applies to diesel but gasoline is different for different regions of the country, so there can be that fluctuation…

It should be closer. PA was always less than New York, then they added a hefty tax, raising fuel on the street and the dock above NY.
Ohio was always less than NY by about 50 cents.
Keep in mind I’m talking western NY, no where near downstate. That’s different

Yeah I'm about 15 miles from the Ohio line and it's usually around .40/gallon cheaper over there. We go to Ohio often so we try to plan ahead and fill up over there when possible. But closest station to me is 4.28 for regular and 5.19 for diesel. Last I heard it was 6.99 on the river but we have no diesel in our pool of the Ohio so no idea how much it is

Putting things into perspective ( or call it sticker shock )

I tested out a new BW center console, only 28 foot and it would be mine in 8 mos for just shy of $400K ....... and they offered me just over $30K for my 300 DA as a trade.

Wow, I would keep my DA and buy a condo close the the lake.

We are $3.56 for car regular now. I did’t check the marina but the manager told me it was down $1.50 from a month ago which was $5.99

Still 4.19 here in western PA thanks to the 3rd largest gas tax in the country
