Looking for advice when talking to the sellers broker. Assuming the boat is clean for its age, lower than average hours, but needs cockpit carpet replacement, rear lounge seat cushions reupholestered, pocket door is off the guides with possibly more than just off the guides, and most definitely needs a cut, polish, and wax out of the water, among other smaller items.
Obviously I don't want to pay more than I need to, but also need the broker to work on my behalf as the purchaser.
Would it be reasonable to offer 10% less than the asking price?

That depends where in the price spectrum the ask is. I got about 10% off my current purchase, but the seller was already in a reasonable ballpark of value. Many boat these days are priced to find the sucker. Good luck.

Asking price is $150K in California. I personally believe that is on the high spectrum, your thoughts?

Sounds reasonable. If you offer 135, the broker will come back with a counter somewhere in between.

Most brokers I've dealt with are keen to get their commission and don't want to work a listing forever .... so likely to persuade the seller if it's a good number.

I would base my offer on what I wanted to have in the boat once I got it into the condition I wanted. Come up with a punch list with cost estimates and figure high to cover some things you miss. Total this list and see what you will have in it if you offer “X”. A lot for me would depend on how well the boat had been maintained mechanically. The cosmetics are cheap compared to some of the mechanicals.

Yes, you are 100% right, mechanicals are important to me to. I am fortunate to have had a conversation with the mechanic that has maintained the boat for the current owner and the previous owner. In the last 12 months maintenance has been done including new raw water pumps, fluids, filters, and aluminum manifolds were changed to cast iron manifolds. The mechanic says the boat is sound, we'll see on sea trail if we get that far, but I optimistic.
I am making a list and costs. Thanks for your input!

hidden costs would be the cockpit seating, those numbers all over the board. I paid 3500 for the entire cockpit to be redone, I have heard of 10-12k which seems crazy. What about the bimini and eisenglass? Does it have a camper top? You can drop $10k there…. Old electronics can be 5-8k pretty easy

For 150k I would want a turn key 380…. Mine is a 2000, different motors, but very similar…. I am In freshwater it would go 125ish maybe… I like the 8.1’s, but 25k more? I May be crazy, but at 150k, I would put a little more in and look for diesels…

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your reply!
Seats are good except for bottoms of u-shaped lounge behind helm, cost here is $1800 to replace all the vinyl on the seat cushions only. Original carpet on helm and lounge has the backing start to separate, it will need replaced. That cost here is $2500. Mechanically sound, but needs a good cut, polish and wax, probably $2000 for that. It has the camper canvas, eisenglass is good, needs water spots removed. Original electronics for sure, but I will be fresh water as well and know my way around the delta well. Maybe someday I will replace the electronics, but not needed right now.

Also check the engine room Halon system for certification, if it is out of spec, a new bottle will cost well over $1,000.

Thanks for the advice, will do, I suspect the survey will include that.

150k for what you described is way to high IMO. I think 150k with gas even in great shape is too much especially with the economic outlook.

Not to sound like a jerk, but welcome to Ca prices...

I was a little taken back by the price tag, but after looking at boat trader, that seems like it’s in the ballpark
I made an offer yesterday, the broker whom I think I can trust told me the owner has turned down other offers. I am a little off asking price, boat is fresh water under cover till 2018, then went to brackish water and is there currently. I have talked to the mechanic that has taken care of the boat for the last 15 years. Recently raw water pumps were replaced, alum manifolds replaced with cast iron, and fluids are up to date.
