While watching a YouTube channel recently, I saw a bunch of boats in Maine using charcoal brickettes in place of the usual Damp Rid buckets.

There were pails of them or even just the bags with the tops torn open.

Anyone ever hear of or try this? I'm tired of throwing away $60.00 worth of these things away every spring.

Yes I have heard of this but never tried it. I reuse my damp rid containers and just by the refill bags. Saves money.

My father in law would do this in his fridge and freezer.

$60? Seems excessive.

I've been doing exactly this for years. Makes it smell nice in there too...

Another thing I do religiously is to run a couple small fans on low just to move air. We use our boat year round, but still leave 2-small fans in the cabin and one in the cockpit under the cockpit cover or the camper canvas. Moving air helps tremendously if you have power.

Open all windows, prop the hatches a crack. winter air is very dry, not humid. Just allow ventilation and you’ll be fine.

I do this with hatches and port lights but shink wrap is pretty tight even with vents.

Despite this the Damp Rid buckets are pretty full come spring. Never had a mold problem, just tired of tossing the buckets.

I could use the charcoal on the grill at the dock.

A guy that used to be at our marina used charcoal. I use the DampRid buckets. Usually 2 in the cabin and 2 upstairs. Last year we were in the climate controlled side and it was great but they called and said they were doing renovations so we were getting temporarily kicked out of the climate controlled area so back to the extremely damp side so likely go with 10 buckets this year

I use 6 buckets and 3 hanging damp rid one 38 ft boat. Also run fan occasional during winter.

Ah, I don’t shrink wrap, so you right. That plastic traps moisture.
Never mind.

Did he ever express an opinion or make a case for doing so?

You weren't buying it I see.
that was before we bought our first boat and we were looking at his. i didn't know enough back then to ask questions. he just said it was cheaper and worked
