We have lots of trouble with seagulls here in the Pacific Northwest leaving their poop on the boat cover. Has anyone found a solution to repel the sea gulls and herrons? Is the standard canvas for the 2023 sea ray spx strong enough to use primarily as the cover? Does it remove from the metal attachment for cleaning? Typically, the cover would be exposed for a couple of weeks at a time during the summer months.

Diane, can you be more specific? There is no "standard" canvas - assuming you're talking about covers here. There is a full cover option and then there are the bow/cockpit covers option.

I'm not sure I understand your question about "strong enough". I don't understand the reference.

Also, there is no "metal attachment" that these covers attach too.

We have a full cover option with separate covers for the bow/cockpit. Below are the specs

OK, good that helps to at least narrow down what type of covers you have. You DO NOT have the "full cover" option - you have the bow/cockpit covers option. Unless you bought the full cover separately?

Will wait to hear clarification on the rest.

"Black canvas" describes the color of your canvas. It does not indicate having a full (mooring/travel) cover. Again, according to your list, there is no full cover mentioned.

I have two suggestions (for your first question):

Treat your canvas with this every year (makes it easier to clean):

And buy one of these:

Whether you have the full cover option, or the bow and cockpit covers, they are both made of the same material and will both hold up the same.

They are both strong enough to withstand wind and rain, etc. They won't last long with constant bombardment of bird poop.

Google bird deterrent devices. The most effective ones I've seen resemble a weather vane, with long arms that swing in the breeze.

With the intent of keeping things factual... the Sea Ray bow/cockpit covers and the Sea Ray full cover are not made of the same material. However, the intent of your message is still valid.

SeaRay's catalog lists the bow/cockpit covers and the bimini as Sunbrella. They don't say what the mooring cover is made of. What is is made from?

Westland made my cover and their only 2 options are sunbrella and sharkskin. Mine surely isn't sharkskin.

The mooring cover "from Sea Ray" is some kind of polyester material - I believe that's what it is, anyways. Its got a different feel than Sunbrella and physically about half the weight. I've honestly never looked for the exact type of material. All I can say is that I've probably had my hands on about 50 to 100 of these covers that come with new boats and they are definitely NOT Sunbrella. Now, if it was ordered aftermarket - then all bets are off :)

My mooring cover is on a 2019 SPX OB. It was an OEM factory order from SeaRay. The tag shows it was manufactured by Westland. I also have the OEM Sunbrella Bimini. I had a local canvas shop make a Sunbrella "shade" to match the bimini, and my Whaler also has a black custom Sunbrella mooring cover.

The "feel", weight and texture of all these four items to my eye is exactly the same. In contrast, I have a lighter polyester cover on another boat, and a sharkskin on the 4th, and they certainly don't resemble Sunbrella.

Maybe my cover is an anomoly.

That surely could be a possibility - nothing can be ruled out when it comes to boats.

It's also possible that your dealer ordered that cover direct from Westland rather than from Sea Ray when they placed the order. I'm not going to try and figure out "why"... but it's a possibility.

But since that full mooring cover became an option through Sea Ray, I have never seen it made of Sunbrella on any of the new boats that came off the truck to our place. And, when placing an order in Sea Ray's system, there is no option for the material choice. It's simply a one-line option... "yes" or "no".

There's definitely another variable here. It's a moot point as to what that variable is, though, because you have what you have and it doesn't really matter as to the reason behind it :)

t :)

I have the factory build sheet and its on there. The label on the cover shows that Westland shipped it to Reynosa, where the boat was assembled.

Regardless, its a really nice cover and probably the best boat cover I ever had.

Yup - I really like that full mooring cover - regardless of the material. Having the cutouts for the cleats and, especially, that ratchet strap in the hem is really cool.

As for the reason - yeah, who knows. It may be an oddball - but if anything, the Sunbrella should last even longer.
