hello everyone, im new to boating and im looking into getting a sea ray as soon as possible and ive looked at a few and found one which has caught my attention. Your input would be greatly appreciated knowing that most of you probably know a lot about these boats. the boat is a 1989 sea ray 340 sundancer. it has 1100 hours on both engines. and the problem with it is the generator, the person selling it says this exactly:THE GENERATOR IS A QUICKSILVER 6500 WATT. THE CONDITION IS UNKNOWN. WHEN YOU TRY TO TURN IT ON FROM THE CONTROL PANEL THERE IS NO RESPONSE. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A BAD FUSE OR SWITCH BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON WE HAVE NEVER HAD IT RUNNING. now i am pretty sure its not as simple as a fuse and am planning on replacing the whole generator or getting it fixed. my questions are; 1.what would be the cost of a new generator with installation, or approximately the cost of a used generator with installation?
2. and also if anyone has a clue to what could be wrong with it, and how much could a repair of such a generator cost me.
3. is it possible to power the boat with just a portable generator?
i know this is not much information to give a proper diagnosis, and what it would it cost me to fix it but any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You'll probably have to get a bit more detail om what he means by "no response".
Is it running and there's no power output, does it fail to start or does it not even crank over? It could be something as trivial as a fuse but if it was you would think something would have been done about it. Need to get more info.

They have never had it running... so how many years have they owned the boat? From non-use alone, many many problems are probable with this gen. You should consider this in what price you would pay for the boat. If there is nothing MAJOR wrong with it you could expect to pay 1500.00 to have it removed new carb, belts, hoses, filters and fluidsetc, and reinstalled. A portable gen. is not reccomended and would be nowhere near as nice as having this gen. working properly. You ARE going to have a survey and mechanic look at this boat???

another issue is if its like my 98 330 it would not even be possibel to remove the generator without pulling the SB engine. Yuck.

I would assume it is going to need major work if it hasnt run in that long.

It is possible and indeed quite easy to remove the generator from the 1996-1999 330DA without removing the starboard engine. Only the outboard exhaust manifold needs to be removed in order to gain clearance.

thats good info. I guess i will have to look at it again with that in mind. I just know that big ole westerbeke looks like it didnt want to come out without a fight.

what about the holding tank? mine has some damage and i was thinking there was no way it could come out without pulling. do you know if there is enough clearance to pull that?

well he says there was a survey done on the boat and its in good health with a value of 38,000, and im pretty sure the generator has not been running for a good couple of years

1. Your odds of finding a used gen in good shape are slim. Figure around $10K for a new one, installed. Since the owner is too lazy to find out what the problem is (could be as simple as a loose wire), you have little choice but to assume the worst and discount your offer accordingly. No one can hazard a guess as to what could be wrong with the info provided, and therefore no reliable estimate for the cost of repair can be made.

2. Please do a search on portable generators, if this topic is discussed again I'm gonna jump off a tall building.
