Need to transport a 39 aft cabin from Long Island sound to the upper Chesapeake bay. Trying to decide weather to have it trucked if thats possible on run it down. Has anyone have any experience doing this?
 
Run it....LI Sound to Cape May Canal north on Delaware Bay thru C&D Canal to the Northern end of the Chesapeake. 3 Days....tops.

when the PO of my 390 purchased it was located in Virginia..

he had a Captain drive it up the coast.. took 2 days..

Can be done in 1 with very close fuel management but its like 14 hours just stopping for 2 times for fuel and starting off with FULL tanks.. and calm conditions
 
Run her on her own bottom! We've done it many times. Two days is right, with a stop in cape may.
 
Trucking a boat through NYC is horribly expensive, most truckers dont want to do it. I agree, drive it down. Enjoy the ride.
 
Have delivered on it own bottom. As an example last year I had an offer on a 390DA in Florida that we backed out of, had estimates of $17,000 to truck to Massachusetts, and approx. $12,000 to have captain deliver.

The majority of the trucking costs are a combination of loading/unloading and permits. The permits are cheap south of VA, and get more expensive as you go north. With the captain your big variable is fuel which is fairly easy to estimate, and days on water which may/will change depending on weather.
 
Run it. There's no better way to get to know your new boat than to spend a lot of hours running it. Take a couple of boating friends with you so you can share time at the helm. To sit there for long hours is tiring and everyone needs a break and some nap time.
 
We ran out 420DA home last spring, it was a 500mi trip. It was a great way to get to know the boat and had some fun to boot. The electronics all seemed to work properly but I also took charts and my little Garmin 276C for comparison/backup. I changed oil, all fuel filters, did misc checking around, minor fixes and was confident the boat was ready for the trip. I gathered up a proper tool kit, spare impellers, filters, misc stuff and away we went. Weather wasn't the best but the trip was great.:grin:
 
definitely run it. There are 0 good reasons to have a boat that runs trucked through NYC. The longest stretch of ocean where you have no good place to pull in is from sandy hook to point pleasant nj. From pp down, there's probably an inlet every 30-45 minutes if you needed to pull in for fuel or if you run into problems. You'll definitely need 2 days if you don't want to run in the dark, but cape may is a good place to stop. Utsch's marina is friendly and helpful, and right next to the lobster house if you're stopping for the night.
 
Perhaps I'm reading too much into your post but it sounds like, cost aside, this might be a trip you're not entirely comfortable doing yourself at first blush. Perfect reason to hire a Captain and make the run with them. The added expense of their day rate, expenses and return transportation will be well worth it in what you'll learn and removing the anxiety of doing a trip like that for the first time will be priceless. It is a straight forward run but if it rises above your skill set or comfort level, especially on a new to you boat, there's no reason to push it on many levels. Hiring a good Cap is easy and I know you will get many good recommendations here.
