Homeport: Charles City, VA
Boat Info
1999/2007 330 Sundancer Hardtop.
Engines
6.2 Merc Horixons
1.5:1 Velvet Drives
Is there a replacement for this that is more sturdy than the OEM? Or if not, is there a way to jury rig the OEM until I can get new ones. Starboard is going. Port cannot be far behind.

Engines are 2007 Merc 6.2L.

Serial Numbers: 0W693655 Port and 0W693654 Starboard.

TIA.

Usually those are pretty good. But try NAPA - take it with you and see if you can match it up to something with a metal "finger ring" handle.

David,
you likely know this but there may be two different dipsticks for your 6.2's depending on the type of transmission your boat has....I searched for new dip sticks for my 2001 6.2's and found there is a dip stick for engines with a V dive transmission and a dip stick for engines with straight transmissions.....apparently the type transmission you have makes a difference in the mounting angle of the engine.....

cant' help you with your original question....sorry....

Oh, in the meantime, if you're worried about the yellow rubber coming off and losing the stick, just pull it out. You can put a piece of tinfoil or plastic over the tube with a rubber band or zip tie.

The cost of OEM just frosts my behind at $30 a pop.

Never thought of tinfoil and a rubber band. I'll assume the dipstick tubes are all pretty close in diameter across all engines?

I have V-drives. I think I'll head to NAPA for a match game this weekend.

I have V-drives. Didn't know there was a difference. Thanks for the info!

I had to replace mine too. No big deal. Just order the OEM.

Thanks all!

If there are differences in the diameter, it's not something I have taken notice to. Besides, you'll have your existing one with you when you go to the store.

You just need something to close the top of the tube for the time being. There's no worry of oil coming out the tube, it's just going to be vapors - so it's really just to keep things clean as the vapor comes out and settles on things.

if you do a goggle search for 'universal oil dip stick' you will get many hits....one of these may work for a lot less cost.....

I was hesitant to pay the $30.00 and could not match them up either at a parts store. I took the dipstick and drilled a small hole through the metal part and the rubber part and put a small piece of wire through the hole and up through the ball on the end. Works perfect.

Gary and Mary... I may have to take your route.

As an FYI to all CSR members, I have yet to find a replacement for the OEM. The cheapest I have seen the OEM is $32.00 plus s&h. So $38 total. I am so pissed I could scream. AAAAHHHHHH,!! OK. I'm better now!

For those looking, the blade is 15 and 1/2 inches long. The width of the blade is 3/16 inches.

Question.... How far is the end of the stick to the bottom of the pan. There are plenty of sticks 17" to 17.5" in length. That cost less than $10. Would the extra 1.5 to 2 inches of stick interfere with anything in the pan? If not, I can notch the stick at the proper place with a dremmel. If so, can it be cut and filed to fit or are dipsticks tempered steel.

yes I know I'm anal over this. It's just that Merc seems to stick it to me every chance they can. That should run for political office.

TIA

Seems like there was a merc service bulletin for this issue. I think the yellow ball coming off was a common problem.
