Boat is getting relettered shortly. I removed all the old lettering. What’s the best way to remove what remains of the glue/gunk?

If it's just the glue then "Goo Gone". Spray or wipe on let sit and continue until all goo is gone 
Then prep the surface with Acetone to remove any residual cleaner so that it does not break down the new lettering adhesive. This will also work better on a warm day as the temp will help soften the adhesive.

“Sentinel 747 Plus” Adhesive Remover.
It works great!
I get it at a local hardware store, but you can google it to see who may carry it locally for you. Might even be able to get it at places like Walmart, Ace, Lowe’s or Home Depot.

I agree with the comments above. If you still have resided gelcoat where the letters were then I would wetsand and compound the area before you put in the new name.

I just went thru this... Hair dryer/ heat gun and peel off old lettering. Goof Off to remove adhesive, 1,000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, cleaner wax to polish and stick new vinyl...

I just did mine. Heat gun and plastic scraper. Goof off to get glue and then wet sand the shadow with 1000, 1500 then 2000. Just watch your sanding so you dont rub through the gel coat. Buff and wax to a shine

WD-40 will take off the gunk. Follow up with acetone or rubbing alcohol to prep it for the new lettering.
