You need the thermostat, dont remove it. Find out why its hot. have you ever serviced the raw water pump? Also the risers get hot all of mine do/ did and one side is always a little hotter for some reason? Go over your cooling system from the outdrive to the wye pipe look for worn or missing...
Your local canvas top guy will just make new ones or if you have a suitable sewing machine you can do it yourself with relative ease. I redid my top on my 268 wasn'to big of a job.
What scoflaw said, also if its a older tappet cam shaft make sure you use the proper oil ie: racing oil and follow cam shaft manufactures instructions on break in or else it will possibly round off a lobe or 2 in short order. If its a newer roller style cam then fire away and go boating!:D
Yeah same here all my wires go down from dash to port side, very visible through access door in the head. I would pull a small nylon rope at same time to make future installs easier

Yeah I had a vinyl wrap made to cover it with the switch id's added, was a bit of a chore getting it right. I also recovered the dash covers as the originals were starting to show their age and didnt go well with the new gauges.
I bought a 87 268 for $3K with a blown 350 engine. It was the second time the engine blew up, I loved the looks and size of the boat and was replacing my 85 ThunderCraft 25' with a 350 combo in it. The thundercraft ran like a scared rabbit so I foolishly expected the 268 to run about the same. I...
